Memorial Day (Firearms Related)

Greeting's All-

As the Memorial Day weekend approaches, I urge all
of the THR family to pause a moment and remember
America's fallen warrior's. Visit a veteran's grave, or
a military cemetery and offer a prayer; or a moment
of silence, as we do not need to forget these brave
men and women who so gallanty gave us the freedom's
that we cherish today!

I will be doing this by shooting a John C. Garand match Sunday.

Ala, give me your take on this: A friend is on the VFW honor guard and he said that after the salute, he gives the widow or next of kin a bag with 2l .06 empties in it.

The bag is made up in advance.

He said this is because often some of the empties are difficult to find at the site.

I would think that the empties that were fired at the ceremony, even if one or two were missing, would be preferable to a bag of "range pick-ups".

I don't see a problem in putting down a large enough ground sheet for the guard to stand on so the empties would be easy to find.

Maybe its no big deal, but if you are going to do the 21 round salute, I would think it should be carried through properly.

I totally agree with you; as it would seem somewhat
senseless to receive a bunch of brass from your local
firing range. I would want the actual shell casings used
in the ceremony!

FootNote: I see you are from my ole' bud Phillip Fulmer's
home county of Blount! Phil is not only a darn good coach,
but a great person as well. GO VOL's!

I'm taking my dad (ex-USMC- if there is such a thing) out to breakfast. We'll talk more about his early life. I missed out on that - I wasn't born till he was 30. So I like to find out more about him when he was younger and his 23 year career in the Marines.
Then (hopefully) "To The Range!"
