Howdy folks. I came to a strange realization at work today. My first car, a 1985 Mercury Capri broke down and I've been trying to sell it for about 5 years as a project car or something. The tires are bad, tranny's bad, clutch is bad, starter's shot, body has some cancer and the engine has about 200,000 miles on it. It's been sitting in my brother-in-law's back yard (a field; he lives in the country) since before I joined the Corps.

After of reading the Buick of truth, I was inspired. I'll take it to a safe spot (know your target and what's beyond, right?) and let the boys and me have some fun (and of course document it for you fine ladies and gentlemen). I own a 20 ga, 9mm, and a .22 rifle. I have access to an AR, 30-30, 12 ga, .40 S&W, .38 Special, .32 ACP, .243, and depending on who else I can round up, maybe some more. Would you like to see the results of this fun time? Are there any specific calibers you'd like to see (both what I have listed and what I might be able to find)? Are there any parts of the car you want to see shot? Is there any advice to perform this...experiment, like things I should do prior to opening fire, things I should remove, stuff like that?
 
You might want to drain the oil and gas just so it doesn't leak.
I'd like to see shot tests 1)through the trunk from side to side 2)straight into the grill to see if rounds will penetrate all the way through a water-filled radiator 3)through the wheels

I'd also love to see someone do serious tests with cinder blocks.

A friend of mine was in the Corps and was taking his Basic Course at Quantico after commissioning in the early 70s. He had an old rusted out Karman Ghia with maybe 300,000 miles on it that died all at once. He was able to sign it over to the Marine Corps and they towed it away from the BOQ. What did they do with it? Several weeks later he was on the 106 recoiless rifle range for live fire and he was the first to shoot. They let you pick your target. Sitting at 5 or 600 yds was his Karman Ghia. He called his target, spotter round hit, and he fired. What a way to get rid of a junk car.
 
Don't let it startle you, but if you shoot the AC condenser in front of the radiator, it will *quickly* release pressure and scare the beejesus out of you if you are not prepared. :D
 
Could do shot tests from the side and front of the engine compartment. See if anything makes it thru and penetrates the block. Also if you wanted to any sort of shooting for accuracy, just take a can of spray paint and put spots on it in a variety of sizes.
 
If it still has its gas tank and lines, you may want to remove them. Although it is very unlikely to explode, if it has fumes in the tank (Remember, it's the FUMES that ignite, not the liquid) it could catch fire, which is (usually :p ) a bad thing
EDIT: although if it's been sitting that long, it's unlikely

Most of them'll just be poking holes in the sheet metal.

Most instructive might be shooting the pistol rounds at the windshield, from various angles. What actually penetrates, what just bounces off?
 
Whatever you decide, be sure to video tape and photograph it. And please, don't act like a lunatic. No need to get out the lab coat, but "9 mo-mo" "fo-tay" "boomstick" "cap" "gat" or "piece" should not be uttered.
 
Try out some 7.62X25 if possible. At Box 'o Truth they were very impressed with what it did to Kevlar helmets.
As a finale, some Tannerite inside the car might be fun. Be safe
 
i know you've written the car off at this point, but have you considered donating it to charity? You'll get a pretty good tax deduction.

7.62x39 is devastating on an automobile. Not much is more effective than a full-auto AK on a non-armored vehicle. I was beyond impressed to see the destruction unleashed.
 
Darn...if we were closer, I'd bring the .30-06 and a whole messa different ammo...from 150-gr FMJ to 220-gr SP.
 
Don't worry, bretheren. The only time I say Fo-tay, gat, or anything like that is when I'm using it in the same context you are using it now. I don't speak street. I won't be able to make a video, but pics will be provided.
 
I've seen "targets" catch fire. Have a fire extinguisher handy as the seats burn rather well.

Definitely drain oil and gas. Draining the radiator is another good idea if there might be any animals in the area you don't want to die an agonizing death.

Where'd you get that information? As an owner of an SKS, I'd be interested in that. (NOTE: I have NO plans whatsoever to shoot at a car or anything, occupied or otherwise, I'm just curious.)

Anyway, yeah, if you can get your hands on an SKS or an AK, I'd like to see the results.

Also, I dunno what use a charity would have for a POS car that doesn't work.
 
I'm quite excited. Of course I'll have to arrange transportation of the car (which in and of itself will be dificult because I'm spending my last pennies to get home and back before I deploy) but I'm sure some of my buddies could help me there...it's ND, everyone has a truck, right?
