i took my 45-70 BPCR out Sunday morning and practiced some for a Quigley Bucket Match next weekend....i didn't get to clean it until today and when i looked down the bore i almost threw up.....About six inches down the bore was a black looking mess that i guessed was rust.....A patch down the bore confirmed my suspicions.....RUST.....i ran a few more patches with #9 and then a brush or two trying to see what it looked like.....i also gave that area a honing with some bore paste but i can still feel the rough area when i run a patch down it........

Questions....is there anything else i can do????

i'm baffled as hell as to what could have caused this so quick....i was sh0oting IMR 4064 with a 535 postell with SPG lube....i didn't look down the bore before shooting yesterday so i guess it could have rusted while in the safe...i had it in a sock and also in a ballistic nylon case,,,,,,,since i shoot it occasionally with black powder (but not in a good while) i generally claen the bore even after shooting smokless powder, with black powder type solvent and then grease it good with bore butter and then put it up....could that have been the problem????? Prior to shooting yestrday, the rifle had been shot with smokless and cleaned on a few occasions so i don't think that black powder could have been a problem....thanks in advance for any suggestions....DICK

If you're occasionally shooting BP, wash out the bore with hot soapy water.

Nylon cases can hold moisture and depending on the humidity level of your area, can help promote rust. Better to store in safe or container where you can use a dehumidifier or dessacant.

Regarding the BBL, clean it up the best you can and test fire it. Pitted bores can still shoot good and you can't tell until you try it. If it shoots poorly, you can have the barrel shortened, muzzle recrowned and sights moved back. It'll look funny, but you'll have a servicable firearm.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Any chance that one of the old Black Powder rounds got mixed into the smokeless rounds?

I saw that happen once at a cowboy shoot. The husband shot in a BP class and wife shot smokeless (different guns). One of the BP shotgun shells got in her gun and made such a big boom that the RO called a cease fire. It's a lot of smoke and nise when you don't exspect it.

u may not want to hear this, but clean ur weapon everytime its fired & leave a light coat of oil in the barrel, which is removed by a dry patch next time u shoot.

i would scrutinise what type of container ur keeping it in as well
