Methods to Remove Unfired 7.62 Cartridge Stuck In Chamber

Gentlemen, thank you for responses.

The concept of "Dieseling", heat of compression and all that stuff seems to be concern that is often raised however I have not heard of a verified case of it happening.

The shorter drill bits 6" etc were to be used for drilling the case exposed either thru the ejection port or magazine well ; thru-barrel drills would be threaded onto a longer extension of under-caliber sized drill rod stock.

RC - has stated why this particular situation is more complex in approaching the stuck cartridge in this particular platform. With only ~ 1/4" of cartridge exposed out of the chamber it is virtually impossible to manipulate the extractor in any way, but more importantly the tail of the bolt is now within the receiver extension (buffer / recoil tube). Efforts to remove the receiver extension are fine, however depending on the particular geometry of the bolt carrier group, it may move back another 1/4" or so but it usually cannot be retracted thru the threaded portion of the lower receiver that fits the recoil tube. So the cartridge is still stuck in the chamber. The removal of the recoil tube does allow some distance of separation of mechanical parts to work as well as not having the primer adjacent to the bolt face, although the bolt has already rotated sufficiently that the firing pin tip is not / cannot be exposed to the primer.

Trying to separate the upper / lower sections of the AR platform also usually do not work; removing both pins and attempting to separate them is usually defeated by the limited forward motion of the upper receiver rear lug (that the take down pin passes thru)....it resides in a close fit recess of the lower, with the safety axle immediately in front of it....the safety is usually not the problem, nor is the hammer on the rear of the bolt carrier, rather the recess allows only ~ 1/4" of forward movement that is not enough to clear the bolt tail from the threaded receiver extension aperture, so it has a little of to-fro movement but still no-joy for extrication.

This is why the Brownells Stuck Case remover is not helpful as free access to to the rear face of the cartridge is not an option.

We all know the list of possible causes of stuck cartridges but usually it is not helpful in solving the problem at hand, removing the live cartridge !

I would like to inquire if anyone has used hydraulic methods to displace a live cartridge.

Walter Howe in his 1946 Professional Gunsmithing book recommended using leather "washers" assembled in a plunger style for the task:

A 2016 variation of his recommendation would employ precision caliber specific Bore-Squeeges for the same purpose.

Finally, hydraulic displacement with a lathe setup that I find interesting.
