Can anyone give me an idea of the manufacture date of a Winchester model 70 Classic Featherweight. I'm just curious if it's one of the more sought after model 70's. Also, just what is the pre-64 vs. other 70's? What's the difference between push-feed, controlled feed, etc. The serial is G79666. Thanks

With the "G" prefix to your serial number, you do not have a pre-64 model 70. I believe you are refering to the pre-64 model 70 when you say "more sought after." A pre-64 model 70 has controlled round feeding, which means there is a claw extractor on the side of the bolt. The claw positively grips the cartridge head for feeding and extracting. This is a Mauser action. The push feed bolt does not have this claw. With that low of a "G" prefix serial number, I doubt your rifle has the claw extractor. Winchester did later revert to the claw extractor in their classic series, but it was probably sometime after you bought your rifle. Pre-64s were considered to have better fit and finish, post 64s to have somewhat cheaper parts. Winchester was assailed for this, but they had to do something as the model 70 cost more than Remington rifles and Winchester was losing sales. There is nothing wrong with push feed. If your rifle is a good shooter, you have a nice rifle. Can't give you an exact date of manufacture, but again, with that low of a "G" prefix serial number, I'd say mid to late 60s.

Mine does have what I would call a claw. It's on the right side of the bolt and sort of wraps around the front of the bolt to grab the spent cartridge. It runs the length of the bolt and is on the right side and is about 1/2" wide. Is that the claw that you are talking about?

todd-45,

Your Serial # is not correct. The "G" prefix indicates a manufacture date of 1968 or newer, while the numeric part of your Serial # (79666), indicates a manufacture date of 1948.

I just checked it again. It is stamped on the right side of the receiver G79666. Thanks

try calling winchester, I dont know about one that old, but I know some companies can look up your serial number and tell you exactly when it was made. Either way I'm sure they still have it in their records.

I have read prior posts with some funny looking Winchester post-'64 serial numbers. No telling when that rifle was made, but it sure wasn't 1948.
