Thank you for contacting me about gun safety related legislation. I support sensible gun safety laws and strict enforcement of those laws to help stem the tide of crimes committed with firearms. I believe Congress can and should pursue legislative solutions to prevent gun violence without infringing on the rights of law-abiding citizens.

I was an original cosponsor of the Brady Law (P.L.103-159), which requires prospective handgun purchasers to undergo criminal background checks before purchasing firearms. Between 1994 and 1999, over 22 million background checks were completed and more than 536,000 felons, fugitives and other prohibited persons were prevented from illegally purchasing firearms. I also support extending the protections of the Brady Law to purchases made at gun shows, thereby closing the loophole that currently permits gun sales without criminal background checks.

I also support increased funding for law enforcement efforts aimed at curbing gun-related crime. I have worked to increase the number of Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) agents and have supported funding for local prosecutors to target gun-related crimes. Between 1993 and 2000, strengthened enforcement efforts resulted in a 16 percent increase in the number of gun cases filed and a 41 percent increase in the number of offenders sentenced to more than five years in prison nationwide. I will continue to support funding for law enforcement efforts to ensure that our gun laws are strictly enforced.

If you would like to learn more about my views and record on this issue, I encourage you to visit the gun safety section of my website at [http://levin.senate.gov].

Best wishes.

Sincerely,
Carl Levin

:barf: :banghead: :cuss: :fire: :barf: Enough said....

Hope your senators are better than mine! Our other senator, Debbie Stabenow, was rated F- by the NRA, if that tells you anything. :barf: She still hasn't responded to any of my letters.

So what was this in response to Juna?

I too have written both of these fine representatives of ours :barf:

Most recently about the senate bill for carry in national parks. I have never received a single reply from either of them though.

I knew they were both pretty anti-gun , but I at least expected the courtesy of a reply :cuss:

Someone should explain to Sen. Levin that in Michigan all private sales of handguns and some so-called assault weapons are controled the same way over-the-counter sales are. To legally purchase a handgun from a dealer, at a gun show, or a private person, one must first obtain a "purchase permit" from a police or sheriff department. This among other things involves a background check. Following the purchase the buyer must return to the department that issued the purchase permit, and registure the gun by obtaining a "safety certificate."

All of this has been going on since 1934. :what:

And there is no evidence (except in the twisted minds of gun-grabbers such as Sen. Levin) that any of this has had an impact on Michigan's crime rate.

I have no idea how Sen. Braindead proposes to close the gunshow loophole that has been closed in his state for 72 years...

Someone should ask him to tell us ...

As much as I miss Michigan sometimes, It's things like this that make me think I should be glad that at least I got out while I could still think back fondly of it as someplace nice. The more news I get out of Michigan, the more it appears to be sliding downhill into California or Illinois (or at least some people are trying very hard to make it so).Why do Michiganders keep electing these SAME horrible people over and over.....:( It makes me feel very sad and ashamed sometimes.

Sen. Levin said:

Question #1: Can you give us a source for these numbers, and how can we examine the data for ourselves?

Question #2: How was the 536,000 figure derived? Actually known prohibited persons or just NICS denials?

Question #3: Of the 536,000, how many were erroneous denials, i.e. non-prohibited persons withthe same name as a prohibited person?

Question #4: Of those that were correct, how many were actually prosecuted?

Levin never saw your letter. That is a canned answer sent by an intern working in his office. If you write about guns you get the "guns" responce letter. It even tries to walk the fence to try and passify both the pro and anti gun people. Get several of your friends to send him a letter that is gun related. Make some sound pro and some sound anti and see if you all get the same canned responce. I'll bet you do.

They are not interested in hearing from people. They will only pay attention if a large enough group speaks up and can effect them financially. That's why the NRA is so important. They got elected and don't want to hear from you until it's time to sweet talk a vote out of you next time the election comes around.

The above statement is not correct, it should read...

Between 1994 and 1999, over 22 million background checks were completed and more than 536,000 felons, fugitives and other prohibited persons were prevented from legally purchasing firearms

Background checks are not needed on the street or black market.

Good old Carl. The only thing he works hard at for his constitutents is automotive production, and he ain't doin' such a hot job as that.

Michigan was early in the "shall issue" and has some fairly reasonable gun laws, no thanks to Carl. Funny that the Peoples Democratic Republic of Michigan is rated lower than Virginia by the Brady campaign (one gun a month) and Michigan regulates sales between private individuals and Virginia doesn't.

Sad and true...

Juna, I have received the same letter each time I write to Levin or Stabmenow, they are two of the poorest minds in Washington and yet the morons in this state keep putting them back in office…We had a real chance this last election to throw Stabmenow out on her duff and did not…

That tells us a lot about this state and the political climate here…
I write those two a lot and get canned responses and stupid rhetoric knowing that they don’t care because they will be elected again and again…

Dan from MI, interesting blog site you have there…Pretty good stuff…Keep up the good work!

Gotta be more than...

Detroiters since they had only a couple hundred thousand turn out to vote...Didn't the unions turn out for Stabmenow? And they always turn out for Levin even though he has his own agenda and does nothing as the union busting continues nationwide...

The union leadership just does not get it and neither one of those Senators can or will do anything to save em...Greed, stupidity and ignorance are the straws that have broken Michigans back...

Now the real question is what will Canada and Mexico do when Americans come knocking on thier doors because they can't survive in their own country and flea north and south to get out of the blight and violence because spineless Senators like Levin and Stabmenow sold us out?

WingNut
"It's not Michiganders, it's DETROITERS."

There are not enough Yoopers to swing the vote, and we suffer for it.

Then...

I wish you had the population up there to change the vote down here, I envy you up there!
How much snow you got?

Edited because I misread your post...

BTW...

Where are you up there? I try to get up there a couple times a year...Love Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor!

Out in the country, up on a hill, on a farm.
Google is your friend.

I own a place in Eastport on Grand Traverse but would much rather have my vacation home on Superior! Gotta love the UP!
