A while back I posted similiar but...

I may be moving to Michigan for school in a year ish...

How is Michigan for gunnies?

I'm in Washington state, for comparison... easy to get ccw (which is reciprocal in MI I believe) no paper on private sales, no requirements for state or local registration, no hi-cap limits, etc...

long and short of Michigan, por favor...

Michigan does have some sort of [ahem] "Safety Inspection" for handguns..actually a back-door registration thing from what I have heard, but I am an Ohio resident. May just apply to handgun purchases but I can't say for certain.

Someone from MI will fill in the details shortly, though.

Michigan requires a permit to purchase for all handgun sales, unless you have a MI carry permit and are buying from a dealer.

No permit required for long guns. Private sales of long guns OK. There have been 10 or 12 rifles and shotguns in the classifieds in my local paper this week.

CCW is "shall issue."

Michigan used to be a C&R only machinegun state, but now any civilian legal MG can be owned by Michigan citizens as long as all Federal requirements are met.

There are a lot of ranges to shoot at in MI. MCRGO lists quite a few on its webpage. The address is www.mcrgo.org. There are ranges with Cowboy Action, Three Gun, .22 Benchrest, and other programs in various parts of the state.

Michigan is closer to Camp Perry, Ohio, where the National Matches are held, and Knob Creek, where one of the biggest MG shoots in the country is held, than Washington. If your school is in the U.P., however, it might seem just about as long to get to either place as from Washington State.

Lots of hunting available in Michigan. Grouse are up this year and my son and I have been chasing them a lot. Deer with a rifle is next and the deer population is supposed to be up this year too.

Hope this helps, eh?

Michigan is OK. We could be better. We do have an active RKBA community working to make things better though, and that's always a good sign.

Here's a rundown on the high points:

CCW - We are a "Shall issue" state now and it's worked well. We do have a mandatory training requirement. Classes aren't hard to find though.

You need to know that your Washington State CCW permit will not be valid as soon as you declare yourself a Michigan resident. We only recognize out-of-state permits as long as they are issued to residents of that state. If you become a Michigan resident, you'll need a Michigan permit.

The only bad news is that you have to be a Michigan resident for, IIRC, six months before you can apply for a Michigan Concealed Pistol License. That means that there will be six months where you won't be able to carry. (Your old permit won't be valid if you declare to be a Michigan resident, and you'll have to wait six months to apply for a Michigan permit.)

Now, as a student, you might be able to retain your Washington residency. I'm not sure how that works so you'll have to ask someone else for advice on that point.

For handguns, we have a mandatory "Safety inspection"/registration process. You have to go to your local police station to get a "Purchase permit" first and then return with the permit and the handgun within 10 days to get the pistol "Safety Inspected." This applies to private sales as well.

We don't have any sort of "AWB" or hi-cap mag ban. Private sales are OK, except we do have that handgun "Safety Inspection"

Machine guns are OK, but no suppressors, SBR's, or SBS's or DD's.

Oh, and this is important since you'll be a student: Under state law, you can not carry in any college or university classroom or dorm. It's a misdeameanor, not just a trespassing charge. And, there are certain universities that can, and do, ban firearms on their campus entirely. IIRC, they are MSU, U of M, and Wayne State University.

Btw, where are you going to be in Michigan? What school? We might be able to give you some tips on the local area, depending on where you are going.

Under state law, you can not carry in any college or university classroom or dorm. It's a felony, not just a trespassing charge.

http://www.mi.gov/msp/0,1607,7-123-1591_3503_4654-10947--,00.html

First offense, civil infraction, fine, loss of permit for 6 months
Second offense, misdemeanor, fine, license revoked
Third offense, felony, fine, license revoked (again?)

Note that says nothing about anywhere besides class and dorm rooms, but I'm not gonna be the one to make a court ruling on the matter.

Handguns are registered, but there is no real issue with the process, never has taken me more than 15 min. Have heard some of the bigger cities grumble and are unfriendly when there is someone applying, but there is nothign they can do to hold up the process. This process goes for any gun operational under 30".

Machine guns are now OK, SBR's and silencers are still banned, although I believe that is also being looked at by the AG, although as a college kid I doubt that is the price range of your toys :)

Anything else goes as far as firearms.

Hunting and fishing are HUGE (MI has more miles of coastline than any state besides AK, deer hunting brings in more money for MI than any other state) if you are into that sort of stuff. November 15 is practically a state holiday :)

Where are you thinking of heading to?

"Michigan requires a permit to purchase for all handgun sales, unless you have a MI carry permit and are buying from a dealer. "

To clarifiy: A permit to purchase or a RI-60 (which is a purchase permit for concealed pistol Lic holders) is required for all handgun sales regardless of private sale or from a dealer. Plus, the ATF 4473 when buying from a dealer.

I stand corrected on the misdemeanor aspect of carrying in a college dorm or classroom.

Your analogy would work quite well though, say, for walking across campus.

As far as that school, I can't give any information on it. Traverse City is a nice area, though.

Just watch if you end up at the casinos, though, apparently they are not included in the parking lot provision (i.e. carry is not OK in the parking lot, like all the otehr prohibited areas), if you read the actual law and the MSP FAQ page.

And one other point I forgot to mention, as a student, even with Washignton residency, you are able to get the permit to purchase, through some sort of loophole. I've had a few out of state friend who to my suprise, were allowed to.

There's an issue with bringing guns to the state as a non resident unless you have a CCW license recognized by Michigan.

If you do not have a CCW license recognized by MI, see the following:

http://www.michigan.gov/documents/MSP_Legal_Update_-_August_2006_169220_7.pdf

If you are going to bring handguns to the state, get a MI driver license first, and then immediately bring the guns to the local police and get "safety inspections."

DrDremel,

Can you provide the laws you used to get through the legal aspect? I have been wanting a mare's leg lever action (stock and barrel cut down lever gun).
