Very short barrel, much reduced velocity........ I'd say that's given......... Not like I plan to use it for long range shooting........

Dont worry about it. Have fun with your build. Its not like anything is permanent on ARs. You can always change stuff up later if you want. I have done plenty of wacky stuff before for the fun of it. Be fun to do some testing with on 223. Gonna be quite the experience shooting that. Probably rattle your teeth.

Yup. I may add a brace or a blade later.

The buffer tube kicking off the back end of those always looked so silly (and cumbersome) to me.

Also, a 5” barrel is giving pathetic performance to the .223 cartridge. It truly robs it of most of its energy. If you want to convert your potential muzzle energy to noise, have at it.

Just seems very, very silly (and noisy).

Looking at the chart in post #3.
I am curious to know what handgun cartridge would give you close to 2000fps out of a 5" barrel? Pretty sure 5.7 and 22TCM go there but it seems like a kinda limited field.

Out of curiosity. With that short of a gas system, how likely will it be for the gas tube to get fouled?

I agree the buffer tube is silly off the back of all these ar pistols. Most are running braces so I guess it doesnt matter. You would think with all the AR pistol stuff out there now someone would bring back or design the kits on the Olympic Arms design where they shifted the the recoil assembly above the action.

Ballistic wise... yeah. Cut down rifles and shotguns have been around forever though so it is what it is. Be better in something like a 10mm. People just like the AR design though and want to have all sorts of configurations with it like anything else. Still gets around 2,000fps which beats 22wmr out of a rifle. Makes a nice little anti rodent assault weapon in a compact package. Some folk just dont like cats. Sounds funny but the Aussies would love these for dealing with rabbit surges.

I would vote no. Besides the dramatic loss of velocity and flash bang in-your-face experience of firing it, with that almost nonexistent handguard, not much to hold on to out front, which will make any position uncomfortable for me and I'm only 5'6". Also those pistol length gas tubes often have cycling issues. These are the reasons we went to 10" barrels on standard carbine length gas systems for our CQB uppers in SOCOM.

Like I said initially, why do I have to have a why? Maybe it's silly, who cares? Oh and all ARs have a buffer tube sticking out the back, most have a stock, brace or blade which can be added after the fact............

kje54.... here is what I mentioned ealier. kind of a neat approach to an AR pistol. It has some downsides but I always thought the concept was a good start from an AR "pistol" perspective. Kind of suprised why nobody ever took it further considering the popularity of The AR stuff.

I went with 10.5" on my pistol build just to be in that middle of velocity and compactness. If I went any shorter I would have gone 9mm or 300Blk instead. A 5" barrel on 556 is doable, you are just limiting the advantages of the round at that point.
