I'm trying to scope a saiga .308 16'' for possible hunting use. I'm looking at fixed 3x or 4x scopes to narrow the field, but geez there are a lot out there. I don't want to pay $390 for a Leupold, since I'll be happy to get 2 MOA out of this rifle with the side scope mount anyways, so I'm looking for a mid-rate fixed scope. Anyone have suggestions?

Nikon, Weaver. Leupolds cost 270 - 300 for the FXII. Sightron makes a 4X and has or had a rebate on it.
quatin, I don't know where you're seeing so many mid-rate fixed scopes. Nikon, Burris, Leupold, Weaver, have all dropped some or all of their fixed-power scopes in recent years. Looks to me like there are hardly any left.

I would actually buy a used Weaver steel tube Micro-Trac in say 2.5X or so and use that. They are hell for tough and you won't have a ton tied up in it. If it all works out that way you want, cool. If the glass is not quite bright enough and you want to upgrade, you'll have proven the mounting system and the concept and you can just mount a newer scope in its place. Then you can sell the Weaver for what you have in it and you good to go :)

My choice would be one of the lower powered Burris line. They too are famous for ruggedness, and with the robust recoil of the 308 Kalashnikov, you will need it...

If you are intent on a fixed power (nothing wrong with that), i'd highly recommend the aforementioned Sightron S-II 4x32mm, but honestly I believe the Vortex Viper 2-7x32mm is a better deal for roughly the same asking price.

:)

I have a new Weaver K-4, like the one in the link below. It came on a rifle I bought off of Gunbroker. I didn't even give it consideration when I made the purchase. I was pleasantly surprised at the glass quality for a scope in this price range. The 1/4 moa @100yds adjustments are spot on and repeatable. My only complaint is it is rather large for a fixed 4X, almost the same size as a VX-II 3-9 x40. But at $140 it's a lot of scope for the money.

put a scope on that you already have, or borrow one.. You will get frustrated trying to get that side mount to hold solid with .308 and probably go back to irons

That's a good one. Thanks.

Weaver K4 it has a 38 mm objective and the price is right .
Very good quality.
Works great on my grandson's Savage 243 and he has killed deer with it.
