I found some bees wax, and mink oil in the shoe department. The mink oil is in paste and liquid form. Is iether (oil, paste) better, or preferable, as far as adjusting the consistantsy goes? Mutton tallow, will be extremely hard to get locally. So I'm trying to see if I can come up with a recipe, without. Other wise I'll order some. The shoe department also has Grizzly Grease. If that is useable.
Parafin I have more than enough of.
Also some call for water pump lube. Is that with or without rust inhibiter?
What I'm doing is, I'm reading what is posted and the sticky for recipes, and checking to see what is available locally. So I can figure out if there is one I like that I can make with local stuff.
The rust inhibiter sounds good, because I don't want my bore to get rusty, however it sounds like an extra ingredient, so I'm worried it may not go with the recipes.
Right now I have plenty of felt wads with parafin, and CVA Patch Lube. But will have that in ming too.
I know there are many different ways that work good. Each has his own, so to speak. I'm interested in no, nos. And deffinate gotta haves.

According to Track of the Wolf, Mink Oil Tallow that's made from mink fat is not the same as the Mink Oil Brand Leather Waterproofing that's sold in shoe stores. Pure mink oil would be better for mixing with wax. Try to make sure that the liquid contains pure mink oil and not a substitute.

Not a liquid, Mink Oil Tallow is actually a soft grease, the tallow rendered from mink fat. Also used as a leather balm, do not confuse our pure Mink Oil tallow with the synthetic blends sometimes sold at shoe stores as Mink Oil Brand leather waterproofing. They are entirely different!

What I found works good as a lubricated patch in muzzle loaders is a cheese cloth saturated in water and soluble oil and let dry, all that remains is the oil saturated in the cloth, then I roll up the cloth and place it in a 35 mm film container, until needed. Hope this helps.;)

I found the beeswax, and mink oil at a "Runnings" store, ( which is a fleet and farm type store) I'm going back to double check, but I don't think iether have an agredients list on them. I don't remember the brand name, but don't believe "mink oil" was the brand, just the product. It is sold as a leather treatment though.
I like to do what I can locally, but I know that purity of the ingredients is important.
I also like to check first before doing.

loose noose: That is similar to the Ballistal and water mixture that kwi uses. I do like the dry lube idea.
I think that is the way I'll be going with my patch strips. Still pondering the felt pad lube tho, and maybe something for cut patches, just for veriety. Still looking for what my guns like best.
