During deer season, I like to apply a unscented oil to my rifle when I come in from the woods. I know it probably doesn't work as well as some of the real gun oils such as Break-Free and Rust Prevent, but they all leave a game spooking scent on my gun. I have noticed that a couple of the unscented gun oils on the market list the only ingredient in them is 100% mineral oil. Is this the same "mineral oil" that is available in the laxative department at the pharmacy. I know that the mineral oil at the pharmacy says it is odorless and tasteless. I was just wondering if I could save some money by getting the big bottle at the pharmacy or do I need to continue buying the little overpriced three and four ounce bottle of unscented gun oil. I only use the unscented oil during hunting season and apply one of the "good" gun oils when I store my guns away till next season. Thanks for any comments back.

I use Rem oil.
Hunting from treestands.......it doesn't seem to cause a problem.

Doubt the deer recognize it as a threat, unless of course you're hunting in Remington Country :p

There used to be a bow oil, years ago, scented to be "natural".
IIRC it was called "Wild Willies".

But that was in the days of the Vanilla "Cover Up" and Foggy Mountain deer scents ( '80s).

I actually used the Cover Up and Foggy Mountain stuff and it worked.

But about 20 yrs ago I quit using scents. Kill more deer now than then too.
Will use calls sparingly, to success.

Oil with possible attractant capabilities?

What about Ballistol?

Smells like some old time deer lures (like black licorice).

Try Deisel fuel.

My farmer friends shoot deer off their tractors every winter.

Deer think it smells like hay feeding time!!

Yep, considering the number of deer in our yard, feedlots, hay corrals, etc.....I don't think the scent of a bit of gun oil is going to make a drastic difference in your success rates. At least the smell of multiple humans...dogs...cats..cows...horses....oil...gas...diesel fuel....propane.....gunpowder.... etc doesn;t seem to cause them much undue stress nor concern. I killled deer just as often (every season) as a cigarette smoker as I do as a nonsmoker. In most conditions, I think the concern over scent is vastly overblown.

Unless you are a scent free human I'm guessing your gun oil doesn't make any difference at all.
