Any suggestions for a decent but inexpensive mil dot scope? I am getting a Remington 700 SPS tactical rifle in .308. I am looking to get a mil dot scope for it. I don't hunt, but I am in the military and on the path to law enforcement, so mil dot is the way to go for me. I don't have the money to spend many hundreds of dollars on a scope. I am just going to be practicing by poking holes in paper, probably in the 300-600max yard range. No 1000 yard shots for me. At least not any time soon. This is just so I can put it on a decent rifle and learn some precision rifle basics. I don't want wal mart crap, but I can't afford top of the line Leupold either. Any alright ones in the 200-350$ range? I'm just trying to learn with OK stuff with equipment that is similar to what I may be using in law enforcement or as a sniper if I choose to try out for that job.

I haven't shot it yet, or even mounted it on my rifle but yesterday I received a BSA 6X24 mil dot scope that came from SWFA http://www.swfa.com/c-213-bsa-mil-dot-riflescopes.aspx
This included a 5" sun shade and a bore sight kit. All this for $111 delivered which in my case, includes sales tax because I live in the same state as SWFA. I looked around to find what I wanted which was a scope that had an overall length of over 20 inches for a project I am working on.

I would say a super sniper scope, that'll give you 10 power and its alot better than a BSA. The SS will run you about $300 but they're decent scopes, I have one on my AR and I like it.

+1 on the Super Sniper. I have the SS10x42M (10x, side parallax knob) on my 700LTR and love it. If you don't mind a fixed power I think you will be more than impressed with the value you'll get out of a Super Sniper.

The millet trs tactical 4-16x50 has gotten some decent reviews, and can be had for 300.

I'm going to pick up a remington 700 in .308 with one of these mounted on in a week or so, I will let you know how it is.

I just got a 6-18X Nikon Buckmasters with MD thru Midway for $300. I got it for a prairie dog rig, and i like the idea that the MD is calibrated for a power lower than the highest (12). This way the subtension between dots is proportionally smaller at 18--better for rangefinding as well as downrange zeroing.

one of the things you pay for with high dollar optics is "return to zero", for lack of a better term. By that I mean if you shoot 5 groups, say 0 clicks for initial, then 16 clicks down, 16 clicks L, 16 clicks up, 16 clicks R, your final group should be on top of your first group. This is known as "shooting a box", I believe. For a scope with 1/4 MOA clicks, it's a 4" box.

So, if you can get an inexpensive Mil-dot scope, you can probably work at range estimation (get a cheap laser range finder to check your math), and also work at hitting targets at various ranges, using the Mil-dot for "holdover".

My understanding is the cheaper scopes just don't do well at shooting boxes, so they aren't used for serious target shooting, but they will probably work OK for what you want. Just don't mess with the turrets, unless you know the scope can shoot a box. :)
