I've never had my Mil Pro freeze up completely on me at a range sesson, or even fail to feed...but with hollowpoints when I chamber the first round from the mag, the slide sticks all the way back and locks up till a small ammount of pressure is put on the back of the slide and then it slams home.

Any DIY fixes for this problem? The feed ramp is almost mirror polished.

...

2 other thoughts..

First, "sling-shot" the slide to force first round in, as opposed to just using the slide release lever..

Second, there are some new Hollow points out, that look just like FMJ bullets, but are actually very soft and collapse on impact of soft tissue, and spread out just like open-end Hollow points.

These have worked for those with HP feed problems, and IIRC, were made just for that reason.

Plus, IMHO, decreases the drag-factor on the bullets flight path, as opposed to open-end HP's that trap air, then pushes its way out with more oncoming air.

Polish the feed ramp.

How many rounds have you fired? It isn't uncommon for an auto to feed FMJ and then hang up on hollow points until it is broken in. Polishing the feed ramp will accelerate the process. Second item to look at is bad mag springs but if the FMJ's are feeding fine then I would focus on the ramp.

I've put only like 200 rounds through it, not quite broken in yet. The gun doesn't hang up when firing, just when chambering the first round in the mag. If I remember correctly, I've tried both mags with no effect. I'll try the other one tonight if I have time.

The FMJ's seem to load 100% fine with no problems...What are the soft point FMJ look alikes called?

Expanding FMJ - EFMJ, loaded by Federal.

I think you'd have to see the feed ramp on a PT145 to understand that polishing isn't going to do much . . .if it was big enough I could shave in mine. :)

Yeah the ramp is almost completely vertical...I ran some HPs through it at the range around the 100 round mark and it ran flawlessly, but when I heard a bump in the night and went to chamber a round it hung up for just a split second.

Needless to say I took the Taurus only far enough to grab my Colt :)

I'm well acquainted with the 145 feed ramp

Don't be decieved by the design of the ramp. You still have plenty of metal on metal contact and the bullet can hang up on a slightly rough surface.

I own two 2nd Gen Mil Pro 145's with nearly 2000 rounds fired in one and 500 in the other. The first didn't require any polishing. Then second did and it immediately took care of feeding issues with 185gr Golden Sabers.

YMMV

Also try disasembling and cleaning the mags. Sometimes when mine get really cruddy the front of the follower will drag causing the rounds to be presented in a horizontal or nose down position. Taurus mags need to have a high upward follower angle to work 100%. Also, OEM mags from Taurus have very stiff springs that settle in with use. Try underloading by 2-3 rounds. If that solves it, you can "excersize" the mag spring by using a pencil or something to jam the followers all the way down repeatedly. After 50-100 repetitions, the springs should ease up a bit.

If I unload 2-3 rounds, I'll only have 3-4 rounds in it :neener:

I'm planning on putting another 100 rounds downrange this weekend, we'll see if that smooths things up a bit.

Are you sure you're letting the slide slam home hard enough? I had the same problem with my seecamp until I started really letting the slide go.. don't baby it.

hm weird.. sounds like more of a problem with the slide than the ammo. Maybe needs a detail strip.. it's locking all the way back? Doesn't sound like a feed ramp problem.

It locks all the way back just fine, the weapon funtions 100% will ball, just not with JHPs
