I just bought a Cimarron Richards Mason Cartridge Conversion revolver in .45 Schofield and it's a lot of fun to shoot. I'm loading my own ammo for it. It would seem to be a good choice for Cowboy Action Shooting, but I can see a few problems with it. For one thing I don't know whether I'd be able to save my brass in a competition environment, and the brass itself is expensive.

Also I've been contemplating the cost of getting started in CAS. It seems like it's a little on the expensive side at first. All things are relative, I guess though. Just consider how much a dedicated Bass fisherman spends (boat, motor, rods, reels, etc.). The 2,000.00 dollars or so that a CAS shooter spends sort of pales in comparison with that.

Plus I'd have a reason to buy more guns.

Don't forget the cost of the clothes.

One event I attended, the competitors were told they could not pick up their brass. Seems the local boy scouts would come in, clean up the range and then sell the brass back to whoever wanted to buy it.

EZ,

At the local, monthly matches members of the posse (squad) pick up your brass and return it to you at the unloading table. Rifle brass that is... your pistol brass stays where you put it, and you "get it back" at the unloading table.

Some of the larger (state, regional, national) matches are "lost brass" matches, meaning they don't allow rifle brass (ejected from your lever action rifle) to be picked up. This is done in order to facilitate movement of hundreds of shooters through 10-12 stages (shooting scenarios) over 2-3 days. Usually, as cdrt describes, a group such as the Boy Scouts picks up the brass afterwards and auctions it off... they keep the proceeds.

If you're interested in CAS shoot me a PM. As good and informative as this board is, I've seen more mis-informed opinion and mis-information about CAS here than I've seen accurate.

Stump Water... SASS # 48329

Stump Water covered the brass bit pretty well.
CAS is a fairly heavy investment initially but it can be a lot of fun as long as you shoot with good guys. I prefer the more laid back types myself vs the hard core competition types and realized that early on so I usually shoot with groups that focus more on the challenging and wacky scenarios rather than the speed type stuff (just too darn serious for me).

I would imagine that in the Metroplex that you would have multiple opportunities every weekend to shoot CAS. You could probably find a group or two that fit your style.

Yes, the total cost can get out of hand, but you will never have more fun while keeping your clothes on. Additionally, if you show up and don't have all of the gear I would bet that folks will fall all over themselves wanting to loan you what you are lacking. Some of the friendliest folks shoot CAS.

you are certainly in the right area for it.tons of shoots every weekend down ur way.
you only buy the guns once, and dpreciation is nearly zero,so no ls no matter what ya do.:)
It is a lot of fun,and I only regret not knowing about it years earlier.:(
Now git out there and buy more cowboy guns!!! YEEEHA!!!!

CAS is fun. Startup costs are high, but from there on, it's simply ammo and fuel costs to get to the matches. I shoot with Zespectre, and we went in on a budget. Total cost for both of us was around 1500 each, essentially spending 250 on the shotgun (Stoeger 12 Gauge SXS), 250 on the rifle (1894 Marlin Lever Action in .357), and 800 on the pistols (2 Taurus Gauchos in .357), and then 200 bucks on various odds and ends like holsters and gunbelts. The outfit is pretty simple: jeans, button down shirt, suspenders, Cowboy Hat, and comfortable boots (Cowboy boots are optional). Best advice I can give you is keep the pistol and rifle caliber the same for logistics reasons.

It's a wonderful game with some of the best shooting times and people around. Ze and I found a club that we enjoy going to, in MD's Eastern Shore. It takes a little over 2 hours to get there, but we do have fun.

For the Nuclear option, get the rifle and shotgun above and 2 DA Nagants for 100 bucks each and just fire them in SA mode. You won't win any contests, but style points are big.

We shoot every weekend that we get a chance to and that's almost every weekend. Many weekends we shoot both Saturday and Sunday.

Cowboy Action Shooting is the most fun that I have ever had with my clo...hmmm...family forum....try it. You'll like it.:D
