What is the latest in the U.S. Military's selection of the next generation of side arm. I have read that the revised Beretta M-9 is out, but not sure who is leading the race at this time. Just curious.

Haven't seen anything put out. The Army officially put out a solicitation request for the XM17 project.

The Army didn't really say no to Beretta's M9A3. Logistically, the DOD would want to stay with the same company if at all possible. If the M9A3 meets the XM17 specs, which as far as I can see it does, then that is a good contender so far. Beretta designed and made the M9A3 before anything official came from the DOD.

I had heard some time ago that Beretta was out but don't remember why. Actually I hope so, I'd like to see this go to an American company

So you don't consider a company that manufactures it's pistols (that go to the military), employing American workers, paying U.S. taxes, an American company?

I hope we're not in for another round of heated discussion about what the next military service pistol should be, because since we're already wedded to the 9mm and that's just not going to change, no one has (in internetworldland) put forth a cogent, compelling argument from going to a completely new platform.

We're running out of M9's. And there is no point in buying a heavy, huge pistol anymore. Glock or the General Dynamics M&P are going to get this one. I'd bet on it, if I could. (well I guess they're on the stock market right?)

What's up with the "we," Kemo Sabe? We are not running out of M9s ... Not the Army or the USMC, anyway ...

Would love to see it be a Smyrna produced G19. The Marine 'Special Operators' have opted more often to carry a Glock than the uber-hallowed, Browning brainchild, single stack, TX Ranger approved, ".45 cuz they don't make a .46", Colt M45A1 CQB pistol. Now I'm a big Colt fan and own several 1911s, but doesn't it make sense to go w/ what our troops want? Lightweight nines are just the "new normal". If a guy really wants to lug around a heavy 8-shot .45 in addition to his 60 pounds of other gear, so be it. There's plenty of room for giving our soldiers and war fighters options. :) 9mm or .45; Ford or Chevy; Kabar or Fairbairn-Sykes. :D

1911 addicts, see below if you want your head to burst:

Hilarious that they chose a simple pistol that costs a third of the Colts and can be maintained by a private.
