Can millitary police officers carry personaly owned handguns? I am curently enlisted as a millitary police officer and I dont like the berreta, I use to own one and the grip on it felt to big for my small hands so I sold it and got a 1911 :). If there any way I could carry my 1911 rather than the M9?

Agreed, I would ask your immediate POC. Most of the Security Forces personel I see everyday all have M9's.

Used to be that you could carry a privately-owned weapon (POW) with the permission or at least willful ignorance of your CO. Once upon a time I had a letter from a Corps Chief of Staff (BG) authorizing me to carry a POW on or off duty, openly or concealed due to the nature of my job. I do remember GEN Schwartzkopf ordered that POWs were not allowed to be used in theater during Desert Shield/Desert Storm. I've been retired since 1995, so I haven't kept up with the current regs.

The answer is No. While on active duty you must carry what is supplied to you by the military. You must qualify with a weapon an with ammo that is supplied by your command to include sustainment. (Normally 9mm NATO). While some personnel are required/or choose to carry the 45 ACP (Depending on Branch and MOS) Mostly 45 ACP is issued to special forces (SEALS ETC) When in doubt always check with your chain of comand as previously stated. The Baretta is a descent weapon, just learn through your training to handle it and overcome your obsticales. If your are having problems check with your trianing department to assist you with your concerns.

US Navy (CIV) Armorer, Security Forces.

a big NO,
think about it same ammo, mags, with the rest of your unit works better then if you all
had different ammo, mags from each other, support/supply/ect ect,,,,,,,,,

Pretty much as stated, NO. But there are always exceptions. Neither of my boys was "issued" a handgun prior to the start GWII. But both "found" suitable sidearms in short order, and carried them until they left. During there following two tours, they always managed to "find" what they needed.

Hard headed Marines, what you going to do with them. Personally, I hug them every chance I get.

And I thought that I was old. Your sons served in WWII?

No but on multiple occasions I was issued a few non-standard sidearms to include a P226,G17, and even a colt pocketlite while I was in Africa attached to the JSOF but the colt was only for the times that we were granted liberty off base. Hey timbohakn I'm a 7th Marines survivor as well.

Sam: Posting a PDF for a now dormant theater of operations doesn't have any basis. Besides, GO #1 is no porn or alcohol. Violates the rules of the host country.

Back on topic. You would have to go VERY high, I am thinking at least Brigade Commander high, in order to get approval to carry your own sidearm. So while I won't say no I will say about the chance of an ice cube in...a very warm place. Ammo too, you have to play with the 9mm NATO FMJ rounds. No fancy HP or penetrators with green tips.

Look on the bright side. At least you might get an M9 that shoots where you put the sights and not into the next firing lane on qual. The M9 I went overseas with was more accurate as a rock.

True. Should have said, "generally the rule is worded like this..."

At least since DS, IIRC, it has been SOP that no US soldier is allowed to carry a personal weapon. It's a big old world, though and -- of course -- what happens in theater sometimes varies.

As an MP? Just very, very unlikely.

Even on the SOF side personally owned handguns are bad news. I know of one ODA where most members faced career ending administrative action after going down range with POWs. And that was back in the Wild West Days of '02/03, before the horde of spot correcting drones descended to out-garrison CONUS.

There are likely other stories with different outcomes (the above mentioned guys' sin was at least partially about getting caught by someone with an axe to grind), but for an MP, I doubt you'll ever be anywhere remote enough with a chain of command permissive enough to get away with carrying any non issue weapons.

Probably not, but why in the world are you asking ME, rather than the people who make those decisions?

Ask politely and don't go off on a rant about the M9 and you might get a polite answer - your armorer isn't interested in your opinion of the M9, or 9mm, or anything but keeping the hardware dumped in his lap functioning.
Hell, in the right environment with the right people in charge, an argument for a 9x19NATO configured 1911-based gun could be made ... but that place and time is unlikely to be a random enlisted guy with a dislike for the M9 (and I say this as a former random enlisted guy with a dislike for the M9)

I wonder how an argument for the 92Vertec would fare. Solves the grip problem, while maintaining ammo compatibility, same controls, and many interchangeable parts.
I mean, it's still a POW, so the answer will likely be the same. But i wonder if it could get that much closer to a yes.

Absolutely no personal weapons. The only way you'll carry a 1911 is if the arms room issues you one. That's how I came to find myself standing watch on an aircraft carrier with a .38 revolver. It's what the arms room handed me that day. They were nice enough to give me twelve rounds in a canvas pouch, though.

And the M9 is accurate enough if you take your time. It fits my hands horribly and I have to shoot slowly, but it goes where you send it.

No, had a friend who was a Chaplains assistant (only Army MOS with bodyguard in the title etc..) Who took his personal M4gery overseas with the blind eye of his supply/PS, well supply and PS left country early, and he had to deal with BDE, and the BDE did not like finding that they had 1 extra gun, and he took loosing 2 ranks rather poorly too. When I saw him, he was E4 again, and out of the SF community, when the last time I saw him, he had just gotten E5(P) and was out the door to a cherry assignment with SF.
