I've decided to start collecting small arms from WWI and WWII from all the major countries. Anyone know of some good websites to start creating a wish list from??

I'd use the Search function to look for posts by Tamara, one of our moderators. She's got a humongous collection of WW1 and WW2 battle rifles. Makes a man envious! :D
 
I'll mention Aim Surplus again. I live within driving distance of AIM, and their prices are hard to beat.

Another vote for the Civilian Marksmanship Program. Right now they have Garands, M1903 and M1903A3 and also M1917 Enfields. I purchased a Garand from them that was one of the guns loaned to the Dutch government. It has a VAR barrel that appears to have seen little use.
 
A Curio and Relics license is a great way to get some good inexpensive items for your collection, and then later a great way to transfer your older rifles and pistols w/o using a normal FFL. The License is 30 bucks for 3 years, and pays for itself after one purchase. You get dealer price for firearms 50 years and older. Mosin Nagants, k98s, Nagant revolvers, sks, etc. Mine has been pretty handy.
 
I forgot about the C&R licsense. By all means, if you're going to collect seriously get one. My dad applied for one, and when he gets, I'm gonna be shipping all manner of guns to him:D

Yes, it is primarily devoted to the Mosin Nagant rifle, but there is plenty of discussion and collecting of other rifles and pistols also. Most members have rifles from other WWI, WWII and Cold War countries, be they Mausers, Enfields, Garands, Arisakas, Carcanos, etc. , and there is plenty of technical info. and advice. Mosin Nagants are a great starting point for a WWII collection, as excellent condition rifles can be found under $100. Try finding a Garand or Springfield in excellent shape for that.

This is the Parallax Forums, and it only has a couple of recently added sites for modern rifle and handgun threads. The rest is all milsurp, with sites dedicated to specific nations, restoration, repairs, shooting, photography, chat room etc. Great moderators for each location.
It is a great site, and newcomers are treated right. No question goes unanswered, and folks are just friendly. Nothing else is tolerated.
You may have to register, as it may have already been closed to non registered, but that is a simple deal, and not much info is required.
30k plus members and as many lurkers, and there is a reason.
 
I second the www.gunboards.com and www.surplusrifles.com - excellent info and you might pick up some leads on more more specific collectors forums from there.

If you're going to start collecting I *highly* recommend a C&R - just noticed you're from IL so not sure how that works with C&R...but if you can swing it, it can save you hundreds of dollars over the course of a year (if you're an active collector!)
 
Just keep in mind, if you get your C&R FFL, you're giving up some of your essential liberties. The BATFE can come and inspect your collection & bound book without a warrant or "just cause" (more like "just because). And yes, they do periodically execute these inspections of C&R FFL's. I would imagine they might do so very frequently if we get Billary back in the White House.
 
Although getting a C&R does give the BATF permission to inspect your bound book and collection, it's limited to once/year max, and must be during reasonable hours. If you don't want to let them into your house, you can arrange to do it at their offices. Also, the inspection only applies to firearms that you've acquired/disposed of that are qualified as C&R and are listed in your bound book.

Getting the C&R doesn't give up any freedoms - that was done years ago in the GCA of 1968. It swaps one little bit of freedom for another - you gain the ability to have a particular class of firearms shipped directly to you, while granting the government permission to inspect your records concerning those firearms. Is it worth it? That's up to you. Me, I think it is - I've got a C&R, and so far haven't been inspected (about half-way through the 3-year license duration).

Great site with lots of collectables. They have varying ranges of quality and prices, but you can find some real gems. I just picked up a WWII vintage Webley Mk. IV in .38 S&W, I should be getting it back from the gunsmith this week and I'll post some pictures after I go range-test it.:D

This myth gets repeated so many times that I am surprised it doesn't make the urban legend list at Snopes.com.
 
You Guys can do better than that!!!!

Come on there are some serious WW2 guys on THR and it would be very interesting to see what would be on the list!!!!
