Don't own any of these, but since buying is out of the question right now, these would be the milsurp I'd like.
What is/was your top list and why?
1. M14/m1A
Don't own a 308 yet and this seems a great SHTF gun as well as a (brief) but important part of our history.
2. M38 Swede
I finally own a mod action 6.5, now I want a great original (could be a 96/38).
3. SKS 7.62x39 w/o the EBR problems. Just looks like a normal rifle: my wife won't think twice about it but would know an AK-47 great SHTF gun with a common round.
4. K98
Just got to have a German rifle. To make this even sweeter for me it would be one of the 9.3 calibers so I can finally say I have a med bore
5. Lee Enfield
Ihave heard the praises sung about the 303. Had a chance last year to buy one but I just haven't been educated about them so can't say which one Id want.

a p08 luger tops my list.

2 1903 springfield
3 m1 garand
4 finnish mosin m39
5 m1 carbine

those are the standards, one day ill own a des lisle carbine ONE DAY!!!!!

Get you a nice M 39 as they are plentiful right now in unissued conditions from gunsnammo

1. M39 (thanks Nathan for the tip^^^:))
2. Australian Lithgow Enfield
3. Brazilian 1908
4. M96 Swede (M38 needs a buddy)
5. 03A3

Don't tell Feinstein but there are zero probs with an SKS in CA I know of yet as long as you don't modify it ( you know, like going crazy and putting a flash surpressor on it).
The M1As are legal if they are made CA compliant (mostly no big mags).
But then again, having an 'under the radar' semi is not a bad thing!
Ill check into the M39. That might kick the Enfield off... (Yah, that M39 wouldn't get by something in CA, but if I got my hands on it I wouldn't need the M1A...)

Truly. It is disturbing how bad the laws are here. The good news is that I know several officers who are more fair minded (you can't count on that) and treat many of the laws as a 'tag on' if there is another crime going on. Besides (until they pass the laws later this year they intend to) there are still some loopholes. But with a Dem legislature and Dem gov we are in trouble with a lot of issues...
Greg

1. M1
2. M39
3. SMLE
4. K31
5. Nagant revolver (Ok, not a rifle, but milsurp)
6. M96 Swede
7. 1908, 1909, or 1912
8. Turk mauser of some sort.
9. PU, PE, or PEM sniper.
10. 24/47
11. more M91/30s
12. more M44s
13. more M38s
14. non-bubbafied Spanish M44 mauser. (Have a bubbafied gone sportered M44 from my dad.)

I know it's supposed to be a short list, but that _is_ my short list. :)

Matt

What are your California limitations?
Isn't #1 & #3 "limited" for you?

I believe it's the 'rifle grenade launcher' on the muzzle of the Yugo M59/66 that's banned in CA. The grenades themselves are NFA items, but I guess that muzzle device just looks so scary it might give someone a heart attack?

I've seen CA compliant Yugo M59/66s for sale on AIM Surplus before (basically they removed the muzzle device). He'll be good to go for a M1A as long as it doesn't have one of those super evil flash suppressors.

They're all rifles so he can get them shipped to himself with a 03 FFL, minus the M1A of course. He will run into the CA law that prohibits shipping C&R handguns to 03 FFLs, because if someone is intent on committing a homicide with a P38, Tokarev, Nagant, etc they will definitely want to send the ATF a $30 check, their name, SSN, and home address first.

Don't forget about the Steyr-Mannlicher M1895, it's rather interesting as an en block clip fed straight pull bolt action rifle and it's going for $100 on J&GSales.com.

Like your 'short list' Matt! Nagant revolver...that is something I didn't know existed...But yes, I guess I could put down a couple of handguns as well...but I am primarily interested in rifles. I would love a commander length 1911 that has been tuned but is older than me.

HappyGeek, you forgot to mention that if ANY gun has a threaded barrel in CA it is a felony [period]. (I did see a guy with a threaded muzzle break once, he knew he was skirting the law, but as I said above it isn't until you get caught doing something else with it that you'll get into trouble.) With our three strikes law though you could find yourself in prison for a very long time for committing a relatively small crime. A suppressed & tuned 10-22 seems to me one of the best all time guns in existence. If I ever live where they are legal I would very much like to have one.

I did not know that. I guess they consider that constructive possession of a flash suppressor, if there's any logic to it at all?

My FiL had a 1903A3.
It was pieced together and Peter wanted it much more than I did, so I've held one but never squeezed the trigger.

excluding guns I already own...
1. Remington M1917
2. swedish M38 or M41(preferably the M41)
3. Remington 1903A3
4. a chinese SKS to bullpup up and futurize... and maybe someday... a rusky

Surplus ammo supply has now been limited to a few common caliber s like the 7.62 x 54 R and 7.62 x 39. SO yes, you have to get the guns of those calibers.

Have four M39 rifles, 1942 Sako, two like new 1968 no names.

When it comes to accurate milsurp rifles, IMO, the Finn M39 is without doubt best of the best.

My milsurp grail gun would be an M1-D, followed by a 1903A4, G43 and AG42B.

I'm still on a black rifle kick right now, but eventually I'll get back to milsurps. I have a pretty good start:

Older pics; a couple have been sold, a couple others added. I guess I ought to update the family photo soon.

Uncle Grinch
You are of course correct: after I read your post I realized my thinking: I want a 9.3 Mauser, and I want a K98. My mind mixed the two together.
Wow Mach IV, nice start.
Above I thought you guys were talking about the sniper rifle M39. Now I understand.
Cheers,
Greg

I was hoping to see some Indian 2A1s in .308 NATO. The jungle carbine version! I got 3 of the rifles but never was able to grab any of the carbines! Great truck rifles in .308! ;)

1) Krag 1898 carbine
2) Persian 98/29 Mauser, BRNO made
3) Swedish Mauser M38 short rifle
4) Ishapor 2A1
5) US Rifle M1917
6) MAS M36
7) FN-49 in 7x57
8) P38 Pistol
9) US Rifle M1903A3
10) Russian made SKS

Honorable Mention: Browning Hi-Power.

My List

#1 M1A/M14
#2 M-1 Garand
#3 K-98 Mauser
I already have an SKS and have zero interest in the rest.:).The M1A is at the top of my list because of my admiration for the M-14 during my time in Uncle Sam's Army.:)

German 98K (I have a Czech made)
Lee Enfield No4
M1 Garand
Mosin Nagant and carbine
Luger
Mauser broomhandle

about 10 more k31's, they should be on all of your lists, shame on you!

I have:
K31
K98 Sporter
3) 91/30's

I'd love a MAS 36, couple Swede rifles, carcano, but the ammo is more scarce...
