mini-14 extractor replacement

any one changed out there extractor on there mini-14? is it held in by the spring tenction?
also has anyone had a problem with the extractor not releaseing the shells? my mini-14 is droping the empty brass at my feet and not sending them flying like it should. the problem I have is some times the shell will stay on the bolt as the next round feads it gets hung up. it does this about evey 3 rounds. I'm also going to change the gas tube and bushing incase I have some leakage. any other thoughts?

Extractor

Since it's a miniaturized Garand bolt, it comes apart about like a Garand bolt.

It's most easily done with a tool made specifically for the job. It fits into the boltface, and you give it a quick twist while pressing in on the spring-loaded ejector...and it all sorta falls apart in your hand. The extractor, ejector, and firing pin are released in the same motion.

Without the (also miniaturized) tool, it's a real bear. Ask me how I know...

If the shell is dropping at your feet, consider changing the ejector spring, not the extractor. It's extracting fine as is. If yours is a Ranch Rifle, then your bolt movement may be sluggish if it's not ejecting well. The action on a semi is pretty violent and that ejector is fixed (non-moving) so when the bolt slams back from recoil, that shell should be ejected like a pea out of a pod.

It is possible that the operating rod is simply not coming back with enough force to eject the cases. Make sure the gas port is clean and the rod isn't obstructed, also try changing ammo.

Up date on mini-14

so I ordered a new fixed ejector for the mini-14 and it solved the probelm. truns out the orig. one was worn down about 1/8 inch
