got a old series mini 14 with a broken extractor. Replaced parts now it will not fire the second shot. fires first round, feeds second round ok, pulling the trigger produces a click, but firing pin does not strike primer. Any suggestions on were to start. This gun came to me in pieces from a gunsmith that couldn't find parts so it maybe something not assembled right. Hate to send it off if it is something simple. THANKS in advance Donnie

Sounds like the bolt is closing, but not turning enough to lock fully. The Garand-based design blocks the hammer from hitting the firing pin unless the bolt is fully locked. Your new extractor may be slowing the bolt stroke just enough to keep the bolt from turning all the way down. Try test firing again, and tap the operating rod handle forward on the second shot. If it fires, you may need to smooth up the front of the extractor to reduce friction, and/or replace the recoil spring with a Wolf unit from Brownells.

^^What Edsrnold said^^ If the bolt hasn't traveled all the way home the hammer can't strike the pin. Also check the firing pin protrusion.

Besides the bolt not closing, it could also be Underfunction.

Ammo issue? What type of ammo? Try different brands. The Mini-14 is supposed to function will all SAAMI spec ammo.

Insufficient energy to push the bolt back far enough or bolt is too sluggish.
Clean the action. Grease on trackway and locking lugs and hammer (where it is pushed back by the bolt). Also clean the gas port.

Sluggish extraction that absorbs too much energy. Clean the chamber and action. Too much pressure from the next cartridge in the magazine pushing up against the bottom of the bolt. Are you using factory magazines or aftermarket? Does it do the same thing with the five round factory magazine?

Have you taken the gun down and given a good cleaning and light oiling?
