I have a Mini 14 of 20 years ago in 223 and a Mini 30 bought new in 2000, now I am hearing about Pre ban and Post ban Minis and I don't know what people are talking about.
Can anybody here be so kind to enlightment me?
Thanks in advance

The only difference was a change in barrel twist. For the first few years of the Mini-14 the twist was 1-10. It changed to 1-7 in 86. In 95 (first year of the AWB) the twist changed to 1-9 and has stayed that way since.

The Mini-30 didn't change for the ban years however there was a change to a .310 bore in 93 or thereabouts.

About the dreaded ban, forget it, it's history.

There was a federal ban on manufacturing "assault rifles" from 14 September 1994 until 13 September 2004. I see you are in New York which has a similar state-level ban.

In the context of the federal "assault rifle" ban, pre-ban meant prior to 14 September 1994, post-ban meant from 14 September 1994 through 13 September 2004. What to call weapons manufactured after 13 September 2004? I have heard no-ban, post-post ban, etc.

You can get a pretty good idea when your Mini-14 was manufactured by checking out this link:

For most of us, yes. For the OP, no, since NY has its own AWB.

A 20 year old Mini-14 is pre-ban, while a rifle bought new in 2000 is post-ban.

It doesn't really matter with Ruger's, as old fart Bill Ruger decided that civilians don't need access to evil things like folding stocks and 10+ round magazines.

Enough of a reason as to not buy ANYTHING from Ruger

Some people may use "preban" to refer to the Mini-14 GB (and Mini-30 GB) -- with bayonet lugs, flash supressors, and sometimes folding stocks. With the ban gone you can of course add these features to your post-ban or no-ban Mini, but Ruger will not sell factory Mini-14 GBs to non-LE civilians, so the "pre-ban" GBs continue to command a premium even with expiration of the ban.

All the more reason to own a Mini-14 GB or AC556!
