Its been so many years ago in honestly do not recall bullet weight. It was factory Remington JSP ammo. What bullets were you using? The 6.8SPC should have the 7.62x39 beat pretty well as far as velocity, sectional density and energy.
Failure 1: solid vitals hit at 40 yards with arterial exit spray and deer went down hard, only to get up 10 minutes later, soak up three more hits (1 vital, 2 quartering away). This deer made it to the county road with a blood trail that disappeared in the other side of the road.
Failure 2: high chest hit at 110 yards with deer dropping, but obviously not hit well. Second **** in the neck. Deer got back up after 15 minutes and walked away. Hit it once more through the shoulder. Huge blood trail across a 890 yard field and I tracked to to my neighbors property where they were dressing it out. Wound channels were narrow, almost like zero expansion occurred. Both lungs were hit and heart showed no evidence of damage.
I cased the 6.8 and hunted the remainder of the weekend with my Marlin 30/30 and took a nice buck the following morning that dropped dead right there to a federal flat tip.
