mini .45 caliber choices....

Star Firestar .45. On my second one. sold the first one to buy an Egyptian Maadi AK, in a moment of weakness. Regretted it, almost immediately.
Ended up selling the Maadi, too.
Bought another one to replace it, about 10 years later. Both have been 100% reliable. (Gasp, not possible. We all know Glocks are the be-all, end-all of guns and the only reliable guns)
Both have been very accurate.
Nobody would ever confuse it for a Glock or XD. It's quite heavy for it's size. Not that I dislike the XD. I like it a lot.
The trade off is that it's very comfortable to shoot. Plus, you could use it as an impact weapon when you run dry. >:)

I'm still using an AMT .45 DAO Backup regularly. They are still the smallest .45 semiauto you will find. But they are heavy as they are all steel, except the grip panels.

Someone mentioned their's didn't hold up. I kinda wonder what was done to make it "break".

There were lots of negatives folks spread about them. The trigger was rough and stiff, they weren't reliable, and so on. The trigger, like many other firearms from the factory wasn't the best. But it took a smith about 30 minutes to take care of that issue.

The reliability issue was mostly because, like all machines, they needed to be broken in. And, firing them isn't fun, so folks never put in the rounds to do so. Heck I've seen them on used gun shelves that likely had only one or two magazines full thru them.

On the plus side regarding weight. If all else fails, they make a pretty good club.

can any of you pocket carry the colt defender or new agent? it seems that having a short bbl for some means its a mini gun, even though it still has a large grip.

I've carried my .45 Back Up since I bought it off a retiring Fed in 97. He had the thing well and properly sorted with polishing prior to his carrying it as his duty back-up. I reckon between his years and mine, we've probably put more rounds through one successfully than most of them get.

The accuracy always amazes me given the size and the reliability is great though I've found it relatively intolerant of backpack debris if I carry it in a messy pack.

I move three magazines of Federal Hydra Shoks (165?) through it a couple-three times a year just to keep up.

I've found the trigger shock to be completely OK if I don't let my trigger finger roll downward at the knuckle on firing.

I also started firing it with my middle finger a couple years ago which is why I polished the right side of the slide. That worked well for engaging the trigger more directly to its arc of travel.

One thing to certainly note is that finding factory holsters is a bear.

Don't laugh, but I have a buddy that carries a Llama MiniMax .45. I never have been big on carrying a"mini" pistol. I always lean toward the full size. My buddy swears by his MiniMax though. He has had a gunsmith go through everything about the gun. He wanted to be able to trust it with his life. He says it is very reliable. I understand that their reliability is about that of an Officers 1911, but I have an Officers that has never skipped a beat. What do you guys know about the MiniMax. I do like how it holds 9+1, even though I am not big on a doublestack .45. I would have to put a lot of rounds through it before I would trust it. He has no doubt about it.

I had considered the glock 36 but it really wasn't all that "mini" so I went with a Kimber RCPII Ultra.

Jerry, the colt new agent/defender is built on the officers size frame wich is about an inch shorter in height than a full size 1911.

I alternate between 2 .45 ACP compacts, a G30 (10+1) and a Detonics CombatMaster (6+1). My G30 was my primary carry for several years and has been utterly reliable. I picked up my CombatMaster a month ago and have been really happy with it and it is an extremely comfortable gun to carry.

You're right holsters are almost non-existant. However, they fit nicely in a small sized Yaqui slide. And beyond that, I've had custom leather guys make a couple. I tried a fabric ankle holster once. Too darned heavy for that unless you have the legs of a body builder (slow as well).

I'm a southpaw, and one of the reasons I really like them is that it's DAO, and the cases eject pretty straight up.

I have one in stainless and really like the SA/DA trigger. The PT145 has grip angle similar to Sig 226/220 and point naturally for me. I can point to anything in the room/house and the sights are always right on the target. As a close range carry/defensive pistol, I consider this to be quite valuable. it's really good for short range point shooting drills, even in low light where I can't see the sights.

Here's a comparison to G27 with Pearce +1 grip extension (The slide is actually shorter than G27 and grip is comparable to G19/G23) - http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?p=8176139#post8176139

Glock 27:
WIDTH - 1.18"
LENGTH - 6.29"
HEIGHT - 4.8" (with +1 Pearce mag extension - 4.17" with 9rd factory flush magazine)

Taurus PT145:
WIDTH - 1.25"
LENGTH - 6.125"
HEIGHT - 5.125"

I have always liked the idea of the Para Hawg guns, but I have never heard someone who owned one that thought they were as good as they were supposed to be. They seem to be the example of; the more you mess with a 1911, the more likely you will have problems with it.

I bought a Kahr CW45 and cut the grip frame down to PM45 length. Now it fits in most of my pockets. I have a PM9 for the ones it won't.

I have a Colt Agent, Added Crimson Trace, I have had it about 2 years now, carry in Concealed daily, just not in the shower.

I love it. It is accurate, I carry it locked and cocked, and use GuardDog ammo. I think a very good combination for Self Defense.

When OK goes to Full Open Carry, I am considering a Full Size 1911 change out simply to get past the 6 & 1 limits and the 3.5" Barrel. Beyond that, Great FireArm.

Count me in as another proud Colt New Agent owner.

Can't pocket carry it though, I have other guns for my pocket.

I've thought about adding CT laser grips, but I love those wood grips so much...

While not a "mini" gun, my Sig P220 Compact is a viable choice if one is considering belt carry....(never will it be a pocket gun)
7 rounds of 45 ACP in a single stack design. Proven track record.
Mine has been flawless through it's first 600 rounds!
