mini red dot sights vrs. Super Redhawk 454 Casull

Super Redhawk project (I need help)!!!

New project guys and gals, that I need help with. I have a Ruger Super redhawk in 454 Casull and want to do a little tinkering with it, just to make it more "mine" and a little more user friendly. First I will be cutting the barrel to 6". This is so I can still hunt with it in the peoples republic of Maryland. Second, will have either Cylinder&Slide or Magna Port work action and do what ever is needed for accuracy improvments and to slick up action.

Now to the thing I need the most help with. I want to remove the sights completely, and put a mini red dot sight on it. Help! I have been on this computer forever and can not find anyone that has placed one on a heavy recoiling anything. I would like any input at all with any make, I am leaning towards the Pride Fowler, but have not ruled out the Doctor or Trijicon.
Any and all opinions on any aspect of the project would be greatly appreciated. I will try to post pics after project is completed.:uhoh:

Dear Sgt. Sabre, I read that as well. The type of red dot that I woul like is the mini type, (without the tube) very small and no rings needed to mount. Thanks for your reply.
 
Right now, I have a 2x Burris on mine, but I've used a Millett one inch tube-type red dot on it which can be used with the Ruger rings. I suspect you'll need machine work to get the JPoint, Docter or Trijicon heads-up sights to work. Freedom Arms offer such mounts for their single action guns, so I suspect they'll stand up to the recoil.

In this pic, you'll see the Millett on the Buckmark and the JPoint on the 22mag revolver. There's some off-brand on the single six.

Thanks gbran, Yes, i'm pretty sure that some custom work will need to be done. For one, I do not like how high the mini red dot (mrd) sights sit on the mounts, (kind of defeats the purpose of the smallest profile possible). What I want is to find a Gunsmith that will either make the rear sight area solid, or pin a piece of steel in the rear sight channel and then tap directly into top of frame for MRD sight. This would get it mounted lower and thus not need a mounting base.

How exactly are you planning to do that? Do you have a custom smith in mind? The reason that I ask is that I've had my own SRH 454 for the last four years and never could find someone that would do a barrell length modification job on it.

Any information is greatly appreciated.
 
Puller--If the Super Redhawk uses the same rear sight as the Super Blackhawk the standard J point mount for Rugers will work with a J point sight. I can't comment on the durability aspect of the J point on a 454 Casull as I've only used them on my .45 acp 1911 and a Ruger .357 mag. They worked just fine there.
 
JImbothefiveth, I understand your point. My answer is this is a hunting revolver. If the sight were to break or run low on batteries, becuse I was a clutz or just stupid, I would go home just like rifle guys that have scopes and no sights. From what I see in the field thats around 30 to 40%. You are rite though, I just think this setup will work for my needs. Thanks for your time.
 
Dear fecmech, I have taken note of this as well, and therein lies the problem. NOBODY ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH HAS PLACED A MINI RED DOT ON A %%^& 454 CASULL, AND HAS SEEN FIT TO POST INFORMATION ANYPLACE ON THIS BOX INFRONT OF ME. Sorry buddy, but I want to get this project startted and research is going slow. Now to what you were saying, the J point from all that I have read and herd is probably not up to the challange of the 454. The mount that you mentioned will fit the SRH, but not the Pride Fowler sight perfectly, and when up against a 454 I want everything to be as solid and perfect as possible.
 
If by the last post I made it sound like I'm only looking at the Pride Fowler sight, it's not true. I'm leaning that way becuse of reputation and the life time warranty. What I would like is anyones opinion on any mini red dot sight on anything that has a little thump to it. Thanks guys
 
Dear BrandonBowers, I hope to leaen from you to. From what I have herd about the type finished Ruger used is its not possible to refinish like new, so you can cut the barrel but then the end finish must be either brushed or polished stainlees,NP3, or some other. Have you been told otherwise. Thanks for your time.
 
Dear Walkalong, Thanks for the input. The clearest dot is one of my goals, as this will help in more accurate shot placement at 50 to 100yds. The size of dot is important to, I think 3 to 5 moa will work for what I need. Any thoughts... Thanks again.

Aimpoint has the clearest sight picture and by far the best dot of any I have used. I have not seen the Pride Fowler or the Burris Fast Fire sights. My Nikon Monarch red dot is very good, but not equal to the Aimpoint.

They have a pic of a low-mounted JPoint. I believe the mount is an insert that replaces the rear sight.

C Puller, have a gunsmith install a small Weaver style rail, and look at the Burris Fast Fire or the Ultra-dot LT.

I put one of the Burris Fast Fire's on my 4 inch S&W 500 Mag. It worked great, I just did not like the look at all.
 
Dear Redhawk, Thank you for jumping in. Could you tell me how many rounds you have down range with the 500, and Fast Fire setup. What is your over all opinion of the Fast Fire, like dot clarity or sharpness, ease of use, like battery change and zeroing for first time use. The reason I ask so many questions is that you stated that you have a Fast Fire now, and yet recomend the Fast Fire (or) Ultra-dot LT. Is there a reason that would lead to not buy the Burris again. Thanks again for the info., and your time.
 
C Puller, I have shot over 400 rounds with this set up. Heavy 440 gr. hot loads, not compensator on the gun either. The dot is very easy to pick up and clarity is good. The dot is not a perfectly round dot, it has fuzzy edges. If you are pin point shooting with a 22, I would say get a Ultra-dot tube red-dot, the Match dot with the smaller 2 MOA dot.

Battery change is not good on the Burris in my opinion, you have to take the sight of the mounting bracket to get to the batteries, I have not had to change out the batteries as of yet though.

Zeroing was very easy, with a small screw driver provided by Burris.

As far as the Ultra-dot LT, I have a buddy with one and he loves it, better than the Burris, because of the fuzzy edges of the red-dot.

The reason I recommend Ultra-dot is because of his experience with his LT unit and mine with there tube red-dots.

The only red-dots I use, and trust are EOTech and Ultra-dot's. The Burris is my least favorite, but I would use it with confidence. The Ultra dots I have are 2 of the 1 inch tubes and 2 of the 30 mm Match dot sights.
All of them are on big recoiling handguns, 475 Linebaugh, 500 Mag, 410 GNR and another 475 Linebaugh.
My EOTech is on my 510 GNR barrel.
 
Redhawk1, I can't thank you enough for the information. I think it will save a lot of time and money. one question, what is your friend using the Ultra-dot LT on, and how long has he had it. On another topic,from your impresive list of revolvers I take it that you have worked with a gunsmith or two. From what I have posted earlier would you have any advice on where to go to have work done, both smithing and machining. I have talked to the folks at Cylinder and Slide, but have not disscused the rear sight plan. I'm a member of HHI, and should run this project past J.D. but afraid he'll tell me to try to stop reinventing the wheel. Thanks again, C.P.
 
C Puller, he has it on a S&W 460 Mag, it has been there a year now. But he shoots the crap out of it. It is his main gun, and his play gun, so he is always shooting it. Well over 600 or 700 rounds of full power 464 Mag loads.

I've got this Optima (Now JPoint) on a 45LC Bisley I cut the barrel down on. It's held up fine with many hot loads. Base is a Weigand, I believe he has for SRH as well.
