I recently took my S&W model 631 4 in revolver to the deer lease. A 55 gallon drum at 25 yards was a good target and I walloped it pretty good with the federal 32 mag ammo. However, when I shot 32 ACP out of my pistol the results were dismal. They all shot much lower, but I was using the same point of aim and the same distance. So I was trying to figure out whether it was less powder, bullet not contacting the lands of the barrel or if I was doing something else wrong.

I don't know that model but is it set up to fire 32 ACP?
I have a Ruger SP-101 in 32 H&R magnum and use 32 H&R mag ammo only, I can use 32 S&W Long also if I want.
The 32 ACP is not as powerful as the 32 H&R so it would hit lower.

S&W .32 revolvers are not meant to shoot .32 ACP, it is just an accident of dimensions that lets them kind of cripple along. The bullet is jacketed and undersize and the thin semi-rim just barely holds headspace close enough to let it shoot at all. Your gun if chambered .32 H&R should also shoot .32 S&W Long and .32 S&W (not short) reasonably well. Not ACP.
