Mississippi Legal Question

Hello everyone. I have a couple of nagging questions for anyone literate in Mississippi gun laws.

1. Since I bought my Kahr CW9 shortly after my 21st birthday this year, I have been keeping it in a cheapo holster secured between the center console and passenger seat of my car. I like the setup since it keeps the pistol easily within reach when I'm seated and driving. Typically when I get into the car I unholster from my hip and reholster into the "seat rig." As Mississippi is a Castle Law state and the law appears to be that if you can legally own the weapon in question then it can be kept in your personal vehicle, concealed or otherwise. I was just wanting a second opinion on this as I've contested it with a few deputy sherrifs that have pulled me over (only for a broken headlight).

2. I am currently employed with a certain retail company based out of Chicago and company policy is that employees are not allowed to have weapons of any type (including knives longer than 2 inches) anywhere on company property, including their vehicles. I believe that State law says that I have the right to keep the pistol in my car regardless of what the company says. Is that correct?

3. I am a full time college student and often go straight from school to work. The parking lot of the mall where the store is located is infamous for muggings and assaults. I don't have time to go home before going to work and I refuse to be in that area unarmed. My question is whether it is legal for me to keep my pistol in the car while on campus. (I don't press the issue and I'm always sure to remove it from the seat holster and lock it away when I come on campus).

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

I'd guess that the company policy would trump Mississippi law. The only reason I think this is just like with a ccw permit you still cannot carry in any private establishment that has posted otherwise. Thats why many ccw folks refuse to do business with any company that forbids weapons, regardless of local law. Private property would be a company car and you would have to abide by company policy. Your private owned vehicle is yours, do as you please. These are just my thoughs on the matter.

My take (and I'm not a lawyer nor do I play one on television) is that since it's a mall parking lot then it's common space that isn't property of the retailer who employs you. While the Property Management company that owns the real estate might have their own policies, if they don't make their wishes known then you're okay.

From the MS statute cited in the other thread, an employer can legally forbid guns in their parking areas, in private locked vehicles, only when access to the parking area is:

"restricted or limited through the use of a gate, security station or other means of restricting or limiting general public access onto the property".

I doubt a mall lot meets this test so I'd guess you're ok there.

Not sure about the campus. You'd better check and stay in compliance. Ask University security, or have one of your non-armed friends ask.

If I recall correctly, if you are a student of any age in MS, you may not possess even in a locked vehicle any firearm on any school campus in the state, home schools and official school firearm-related activities (perhaps ROTC?) excepted. You may be legal if you park far enough off campus.
