I'm out of Win231 (And so is everyone else around here), and I have several pounds of Tightgroup. Searching the forums, I don't see any pet loads mentioned for Tightgroup and .45 or .40. Is Tightgroup the wrong powder to be using with lead?

I should preface this to say, I've been reloading for going on 12 years now (on and off), but have always used jacketed bullets. I'm almost out of Jacketed bullets, and I'm turning to lead due to cost considerations. I feel like I'm having to learn reloading all over again!

I suppose I could go shop for another powder, but I wanted to use what I have if I could.

Thoughts, suggestions?

I thought I'd add:

I'm loading .45 Button 185 Grain SWC for my fiancé's Kimber
I'm loading IDP #5 180 Grain TCFP for my Springfield XD Tactical
I still have a few hundred Montana Gold 9mm, so I'm going to figure out the 40 and 45 before I buy more Missouri Bullets.

I've used it for .357 Magnum and 9mm with good success. I can't recall if I tried it for .45 and .38 Spcl.

Yeah, go for it. There may be other "better" powders, but it'll work. Follow the data and double-check to make sure cases aren't double charged. TG usually takes pretty small charges; easy to 2x charge, so pay attention (not implying that you don't...).

I'm shooting 5.2gr. of Titegroup under a 200gr LSWC Missouri Bullet in .45. I seat them to 1.230" That gives me very close to 900fps out of my gun.

I have also tried it in .40, but it seemed too punchy for the velocity that I was getting.
I think it is better suited to the .45 loads.

Thank you. That gives me a ballpark idea of where to start.

On the same thread, does anyone have a super-accurate recommendation for powder if I did feel like buying another pound...assuming the same two bullets of course?

I normally shoot Solo 1000 in .45 with lead bullets becuase it is very consistent and as clean a powder as you will find when shooting with lead.

In .40 with lead bullets, I like Winchester WST the best of the powders that I have tried. It gives me the velocity that I want with soft recoil (relatively). It isn't too dirty, and it meters and shoots consistently.

CORRECTION:
The powder I am using in .40 is WSF not WST. Sorry for the mixup.

I've been loading lead rounds with Titegroup for over a year and it's one of my favorite loads. Besides being very accurate, I like the puff of smoke I get from the lube.

I like it in .38spl, .357, 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 both cast and platted bullets with great success. Some people feel it contribules to lead fouling due to it's fast burn rate but I don't see much difference between it and slower powders like unique. It burns clean and gives plesant recoil.

Accuracy? 700x. Good metering and all around performance in a target load, AA#2 or Bullseye for me.
