I live in Tennessee, and am taking a trip to st Louis this weekend. Our laws her in TN are pretty lax, so I am wondering if anyone can help me about the laws in Missouri. Do they honor a TN carry permit? If so, can someone give me a quick rundown of how/when/where you can carry in MO? Thanks in advance!

I have always wondered about the reciprocity between the states. Thanks for the updated information Navy LCDR! New to THR and glad it exists, great information here.

Thanks for the info. I noticed when reading these links that it is referred to in MO as a Concealed Carry Permit, as opposed to a Handgun Carry Permit. Does this imply that OC is off limits in MO? Do I have to carry concealed?

Best not to open carry in Missouri....

Summary
While open carry is generally legal in Missouri, their preemption statute is unique in that it preempts the entire field of firearms law except for the regulation of open carry. Consequently, carrying openly in Missouri will expose you to a checkerboard of local ordinances.

I'm not a lawyer. Here is the laymans understanding.

MO recognizes permits from ANY state.
You still can't carry anywhere Federal Law prohibits.
MO has a list of "prohibited places". It is not a crime to carry there, but...
If you are asked to leave, do so, and do not argue. If LE are summoned, possible fine, etc. This included businesses and private properties that are posted.
Required to show permit on demand of LEO, penalty is a fine if you do not.

OC: Permissible at state level. However, local laws may regulate open carry.

"Concealed Carry" includes the carry of other legal (in MO) deadly weapons concealed on or about the person. However, only firearms are specifically "off-limits" to local regs.

Of course, you should verify all this yourself, or contact an actual attorney. ;)

MO is one of the best states....at last check, you can carry while in your vehicle while in transit....even if you don't have a permit....but can't leave your vehicle while carrying. They recognize all the other states permits, even for people carrying non-res permits. They do NOT recognize a permit from another state held by a MO resident if the MO resident cannot get a MO permit.
Cheers to MO. Boo to IL. where I can train people to get permits to carry in other states but can't get one in my home state..our legislators don't trust us here.

Ranked one of the "worst" by the Brady Bunch. Taken as a badge of honor. :D

They do NOT recognize a permit from another state held by a MO resident if the MO resident cannot get a MO permit.
Not so, MO recognizes ALL out of state permits. That includes MO residents with Out-Of-State permits, regardless of whether they have or are eligible for a MO CCW.

Case in point, an 18 year old Missouri resident is not (yet) eligible for a MO CCW. Buuuuut, they can and do carry on the ever popular Maine Permit.

True. If you are 21 years or older, and the firearm is lawfully possessed, you can conceal a handgun in the passenger compartment of a motor vehicle.

Again, IANAL. :neener:
