i've read of numerous folk here saying that mixing HP and FMJ in a mag would greatly increase chances of a FTF. i don't understand why that would be. sure....the bullets may be slightly different in length....but the pistol has no memory. it doesn't know that there is a mix in there. in fact the pistol doesn't know anything...it just a machine.

am i missing something here? I'm not saying they're wrong. just trying to understand what they say.

I've heard of it being done without issues, just never really saw the point of it. If you're not sure what you'll need at any given time, I'd just carry one mag of each, hollow and fmj.

The only issues I have seen with mix and match comes from cartridges that use semi-rimmed cases such as the .32 acp and .38acp/.38 Super where as rim diamter can vary a little from manufacturer to manufacturer and this varience can contribute to rim lock of the cartridges in the magazine.

It should not make any difference.

I mix / match hollow and FMJ in my home defense weapon.

The question should be, why would you want too in the first place?

Almost any modern JHP will provide superior wound ballistics over FMJ-RN.

Should the JHP clog and fail to expand, it will perform just like a FMJ.
If it does expand, it is the superior bullet.

So, whats the point?

Myself, I prefer recoil & blast to be the same every shot from identical JHP ammo, so it doesn't slow follow-up shots.
