Mixing headstamps on .45 ACP reloads?

Can't speak for .45, as I reload 9mm only. But, I do not sort by headstamp and haven't noticed any ill-effects. Also, Sellier & Bellot (S&B) brass reloads fine for me, but can be a little tougher to deprime. However, WCC marked brass is a pain to reprime. Win some, lose some.

I have 400 RA-65 brass that looks more like copper than brass.(reddish copper color) Anybody know anything about them?

Mine is from 42. I can't bell it, not that it matters since the bullet drops right in anyway, and I can't crimp it. It's more like spring steel than brass. Could take a torch to it and see if that softens it up a bit I suppose.

This sounds more like bronze than brass.

I've never noticed a difference with .45 ACP.

I do sort .357 & .44 mag brass, seems that higher pressure makes more difference.

That is what it looks like.

How does yours (the '65 stuff) work? Will it hold a bullet?

I have never tried it. I'll see.

I sized it, cleaned the primer pockets, and tumbled it years ago. The outside looked OK then, but over time turned to a color like copper when it tarnishes. The primer pocket where I cleaned it with a tool is still bright brass looking. (I just checked) A bullet will not go in the sized brass.

If you shoot it until the headstamps smear off then you won't worry about mixing them! If I want to accuracy test something I may pick out 10 loaded pieces of the same stamp but I have yet to see much of a difference. I'll say with a little case like 9mm matching cases will show you something, all my good loads there go in WCC case.

Walkalong and GaryL

I have some RA 64 brass. Works fine once I got the crimp out of the primer pocket. It does have a slightly different color. Maybe they used a different formula for the brass back then. Anyway, it shoots just fine and I haven't had a problems with it.

bullseye

A friend shoots bullseye. At the range he uses a brass catcher, buys 1000
pieces of match brass, (same headstamp) counts the number of times each
has been fired/reloaded.

If your gonna shoot bullseye its a whole different story. If your gonna
shoot IDPA or just going to the range, no need to be concerned about
mixed headstamps, except for the exceptions listed.

I sort because I am Anal... all in the same type container and color
facing the same direction..polished to a high luster and properly labeled !!
but that just me.....and my 0.02 Echo....out..

I only toss the a-merc brass and now I toss the CCI. I have loaded alot of CCI in 45 acp but it definatly is thinner and seemed to vary a bit on the overall length on the finished rounds. CCI did just fine and the variations were so slight as to not be a real concern for my uses but I have so much brass from Winchester, R-P, and federal that I just don't bother with the CCI brass anymore.

I sort .45acp brass for two things only. Like others have said the A-Merc is junk. I also sort out the "NT" brass that has a small primer pocket. Really slows down the rhythm on a progressive press....
