I'm having some trouble with a newly purchased Ruger magazine for my MKII. I had about 10% FTE yesterday. Using my OEM (25 year old) magazine, only in about 1 in 20. We were using Remington Gold Bullets from Wally-world.
After cleaning, I reshaped the extractor, which is supposed to resolve ammo issues. I finally gave up trying to use the new mag. With the ammo used previously (Federal?) and the old mag, I had zero issues with three people firing the gun.

Last night I found this tweak to the magazine. Has anyone tried this on their MKII or have comments on my issues?

I've never seen that link.

You are having failures to extract?

What did you do to your extractor?

Have you tried Rimfire Central?

Reduce your variables.

A Mark II with nothing wrong with it (and ammo that isn't screwed up somehow) should have essentially zero FTE in my experience. I've put bricks through them without a single misfeed.

If you're getting 5% FTE with a box of ammo, try a different box before grinding away on a magazine because it gives 10% FTE instead of 5%!

Same Problem ..... I Called Ruger

The lady said Remington Golds are off spec and will not feed in the Mark series.

I switched to Winchester, and it shoots fine.

Just one thing......... nobody has any 22 for sale! :uhoh:

With the MKII's it's almost always an ammo issue. They're the most picky gun I've ever seen where ammo is concerned except maybe a Walther 22. Get something with a bit more snap. Mine likes cci and winchester but will not feed remington or umc or on and on. Ammo

Really?

I've shot all sorts of junk through mine, and good stuff, too.

Only issues I've ever had were with subsonics not cycling reliably.

ssjones,

Yes I've done the magazine mod mentioned at that blog. It worked wonders for my Mk III Hunter and 5 mags. Now I can shoot 300-500 rounds with no stovepipes or failure-to feed/eject.

rimfirecentral.com is a nice resource for rimfire shooters. Several there have recommended the magazine mod.

Thanks guys. I will try a different brand of ammo.
I did complete the modification to the new magazine, we'll see what happens. (thanks for confirmation Dave_D55)

P02Hammer - I just reshaped the extractor with a file, took off the rounded edge. This work is detailed in a MkII smithwork guide available from the rugerforum.net (library).

Someone on that forum suggested I call Ruger about the magazine an ask for a "low latch" and suggests Ruger will send me a free one. He also suggested replacing the latch spring. This gun is 25 years old and is only recently being fired with any regularity. I guess some wear parts is to be expected.

I'm hoping to get a chance to shoot it Wednesday evening. I'll bring another type of ammo and see what happens.

Well, fired about 150 rounds this afternoon and learned a few things.
1st - the new magazine doesn't go in correctly with one push like the old one. When it is first inserted and the latch feels like it closes, you can see a little daylight at the rear edge of the mag. This does not happen with the old magazine. It pops right in and the latch snaps fully into place. See pictures below.

Also:
- The gun doesn't stovepipe or FTE with non-Remington ammo with either mag (provided the new one is correctly inserted).
- It still stovepipes occasionally with the Remington Gold Bullets, but only five rounds in 150 today. It did this even with the old magazine. This is a huge improvement from my last outing.

I joined our local Izaak Walton League and have full access to their ranges. My range time now will only limited by the ammo fund. <g>
