Here's what I wrote to her paper:

Karin Winegar tells us that private citizens don't need guns because "...a .38 or a 9-millimeter or even an AK-47 are[sic] not much protection against anthrax, smallpox, suicide bombers and nuclear radiation. They are not much protection against heart disease, either, which is the chief killer of Americans (270 per 100,000), or cancer (203 deaths per 100,000) or diabetes (25 deaths per 100,000). "
She is absolutely correct that a handgun (or even an AK-47) will not protect me against smallpox. Or anthrax. Or nuclear radiation. Or heart disease.
Neither will a fire extinguisher. Do you have one in your home?
Since heart disease is the chief killer of Americans, there's no need to worry about a fire in your home; after all, you're more likely to die from heart problems than you are to ever need that fire extinguisher.
I do not intend to have a house fire. But I keep a fire extinguisher in my house. I do not expect to be in a car accident. But I have insurance. I do not expect to have a flat tire. But I keep a spare in the trunk. I do not expect to cut myself in my workshop. But I keep a first-aid kit in the closet.
I do not expect my family to be attacked. But I carry a gun.
I have carried it for years. I have never had to use it. It is unlikely that I will ever have to use it. But if I do, my life, my wife's life, and the lives of our kids may depend on me having it. Until that time, it's just like the fire extinguisher in my kitchen: it's there, just in case.
We'll see if they bite.
