HEADLINE: SPRING FIELD REPORT: Youth bow deer hunt set for Camp Ripley

BYLINE: Staff reports

BODY:
The Minnesota Deer Hunters Association is accepting applications for a youth-only archery deer hunt Oct. 11-12 at Camp Ripley near Little Falls. A maximum of 150 permits will be issued to eligible youths ages 12-17 as of Oct. 8. Youths must have completed a hunter safety course and must have their application postmarked by Aug. 1.

An adult mentor, who will not be allowed to hunt or carry a bow and arrow, must accompany all youths during the hunt. A random drawing Aug. 8 will be held publicly at MDHA in Grand Rapids to select hunt participants.

Successful applicants and their parents or guardians will identify an adult mentor to accompany youths. Hunt sponsors will assist with identification of appropriate mentors if requested by youth and their parents or guardians.

Youth hunters will be required to have a valid Minnesota archery deer hunting license or all-season deer license and attend a prehunt education and orientation session. Permits will allow youths to take only one deer during the hunt. No group applications or party hunting will be allowed. Deer of either sex can be taken.

To apply, Minnesota resident youths must provide a customer ID from one of the following:

* a valid Minnesota driver's license.

* state of Minnesota ID card (issued by the Department of Public Safety)

* a firearms safety certificate number.

* a bowhunter education number, or the DNR number found on a hunting or fishing license.

Youths must apply for a permit by completing a 2003 Camp Ripley youth archery hunt application. Application forms are available by calling MDHA at 1-800-450-DEER (3337), or by downloading an electronic application at MDHA's Web site at www.mndeerhunters.com

A processing fee of $4 per application is required. This nonrefundable fee must be sent in with the application for a Camp Ripley youth archery permit.

Bass season opens Saturday: Minnesota's general bass season open Saturday. The limit is six fish daily and in possession.
