Model 10 price - WOW

WHAT!!

This has left the Old Fuff in such a state of shock that it may take months for him to recover. Is there no end to this... this escalation? How can the government say that inflation is under control? Oh woe is me...

On the other hand as he examines his modest collection of rusty old iron, pure greed starts to come to the forefront... :evil:
 
There's a local pawnshop selling a 13-2, 4-inch, for $389. It's truly like new except for a small ding on one of the grips. Last month it was $399. I'm checking it out from time-to-time to see if they continue to cut the price. When it gets low enough, I may make an offer. This place sells lots of autos so a revolver may sit on the shelf for quite a while.

...and there's not even a drag ring on the cylinder ! I'd appreciate comments on what a fair price for this might be...
 
I told ya the gun the fella was lookin' at in the other thread was $350 easy.

Then the crows all showed up, loudly proclaiming their recollections from days gone by.

Pre-lock S&W guns are pricey.

Frankly, just about any gun is gonna be real pricey pretty soon I think.

My new retirement plan is buying $300 S&W 10 at my local shop and selling them on gun broker for $680.

Gunbroker is full of gun shops willing to sell Hi-points for $250 and tons of suckers willing to pay well beyond MSRP for handguns.

It would seem that they buyer came late, has a good reputation, and has previously purchased 26 firearms (or something). There is a saying among gun collectors to the effect, "that if you pay too much don't worry, the value will catch up."

But I think he's going to have a long wait. Maybe that's his intention.
 
Did you notice that the guy who got the good deal was the same guy bidding up the other one? He was apparently willing to pay a lot more then he did for his.

Price was a bit steep to say the least. Wish I was better at guesstimating Smith pre-lock revolver prices. Everyone often brags about how cheap they buy Model 10's from time to time. I've heard prices in the $250-$350 range. The prices I SEE are usually in the $350-$400 range for a good 98%+ Model 10's. Maybe revolvers are just expensive in my neck of the woods?? That's why I started the other thread on Smith prices to let knowledgable folks relate the prices they pay and see. For example, folks talk about $350 Model 17's; well I have not seen one at that price in years. Last show had them priced up to the $700 area with most being in the $600-$650 price range. These prices are just a bit below buying a new Model 617. So, if you consider the price on the auction being on the high side, well, maybe, just maybe, this is an omen of what is to come in the near future (or the buyer has more money than sense?).
 
that's just nuts, now that prices having been zooming up on the Smith's, but dayyum. I bought my 4" heavy barrel for $200 a couple years ago and thought it was a bit high at that price! Guess I'll hang onto it...

gone are the days of the $200 range j and k frames, alas...
 
This has to be an aberration, auctions tend to produce some strange one off sales, both high and low. I've been complaining about the prices of Smith's for a couple of years now but this is beyond reason, it has to be auction fever.
 
Something looks funny about the bids and times hexidismal posted . . . it appears a couple of the bidders kept raising their ownbids. Was it perhaps a "reserve price" issue?

It was a "No Reserve" auction - Nope, they just have lost their minds.

I was watching those two out of curiousity. "Curiousity killed the cat" you know. I have overpaid for a gun before, but that was just nuts.

Bidders sometimes do that as insurance they will still be in the running if they are outbid at a time they can't watch. If the item should go at a lower figure they will pay just that, plus one increment (usually 1 to 5 dollars).

If another bidder comes along they must keep bidding up until they reach the first bidders maximum. Then if they bid one more time they'll win - unless of course they are outbid. It appears to me that at least three bidders bid more then they should have, but sometimes that's the way it goes.

Well seeing as you all already have Model 10s it would be better to send them to the people who don't- people like me, for instance.
Also will gladly accept Model 17s, 19s, 64s, 14s, 67s, 68s, 11s, 12s, 13s, 15s, 16s, 18s, etc etc
