Model 17 Serial number Age

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone has the S&W book and could tell me what year serial number K428xxx dates to. I suspect since its a 17 no Dash and has the 4th screw Its between 1957 and 1963. It has the Diamond target grips on it, wide serrated target trigger, wide spur target hammer, and serated front and back straps.

So it followed me home.

I took it to the range, had done all of the checkouts in the revolver checkout thread. Load it up and the Trigger fails to return every time I fire it. I have to push the trigger firmly forward. UH OHH.

I didn't have any oil with me, the gun probably sat around for 20 years since the last time it was fired, and it was bone dry. I figured it probably had the rebound spring cut too much and a bunch of gun dried up inside.

So I took it home removed the stocks and put a squirt of Kroil in the back, on the rebound slide etc.

Placed 6 snap caps in it and after 2 or three pulls the trigger was snapping back with authority, removed the cylinder and discovered it was clean as a whistle but also bone dry, A little lube and its spinning like its on ball bearings.

I was very relieved that there was no repair needed.
