Model 19-3 Date and finish question

This is my first post and hope someone out there can be of assistance. I recently purchased a Smith Model 19-3. It seems to be in excellent condition but I have 2 questions. One being the finish. The barrel and cylinder have a dark copper color to them whereas the rest of the gun is the traditional dark blue. Is this normal and why? My second question is dating the gun. It's serial number appears to be A (or a 4) K3053. Thanks in advance for the help and I look forward to participating in this forum.

1973, serial number is 4Kxxxx. It's not unknown for bluing to discolor to a 'plumb' shade, that may be what you are seeing. You will need to post good pics for a proper diagnosis.

Try this. Get some good gun oil. Get some cleaning patches. Put the oil on the patches and wipe the copper color areas.

I have a feeling you have surface rust there.

I believe you're correct. DrLaw replied that it may be surface rust but I didn't think so due to the high gloss. I did as he said and there was no change. I really like the "plumb" color. It really adds character to the piece. I am thrilled with this revolver. Thanks.

As long as you don't put too much pressure on, you can take a little Flitz polish and rub the copper areas. You'll be able to tell really quickly whether it's surface rust or a plum-colored bluing.

In 1973 Smith was still delivering a premium product, for the most, and blued finishes were one of their strong points. I can't help be wonder if the barre and cylinder were not refinished?

The barrel and cylinder are likely hardened differently than the frame, it would not be impossible for them to have take to the blueing differently with a slight change in the color that has become more pronounced with age. Or, the barrel and cylinder have been replaced. Or, it was reblued. Without really good pictures is hard to tell. On the bright side, if done right, none of the above will affect its value as a "gun" simply to shoot.
