Model 1917 Enfield side scope mount?

This is my Model 1917 (sporterized long before I acquired it) and when I received it, I noticed that there is what looks like a dovetail scope mount on the left side of the receiver. Anyone recognize this particular setup and how to utilize it if I so choose? Thanks in advance - I appreciate the expertise found here.

Are you sure that is a 1917 and not a commercial 30S?

It does not look like a Griffin and Howe or Jaeger side mount, not an Echo. I'm out of ideas.

It’s a Model 1917 made in October 1918 at Eddystone.

I should also mention that it’s a 3/8” dovetail.
