My bud has a good model 28 for sale. $300 to me. It looks like a five inch barrel. Most the bluing is on it and it shoots straight. As straight as I can. I am a 1911 guy. Is this a good deal? It has fixed sites and it is huge.

Fine Deal. I'd jump on it. Then of course I already have two of them.
You will enjoy the Hiway Patrolman quite a bit.

It will be either a 4" or 6" barrel unless someone either switched barrels or cut back a 6".

The S&W M28 was only offered in a 4" or 6" versions and all have adjustable sights. $300 is a very good price if the gun is in reasonable condition. If it has a 5" barrel, then it could be a M27. In that case, $300 is a GREAT deal. If it has fixed sights, it could be a M20 or M21 (can't remember). If it has a
5" barrel AND fixed sights, it's probably not an N-Frame but a M&P. But you said the gun was huge, so I suspect it is an N-Frame.

A Big WHOA, Mod 28s had adjustable sights, if it has fixed sights and is an N frame it is probably a heavy duty or post '56 model 20. $300 for a decent Heavy duty is great. I sold my last HD for around $795. Get a serial number and come back, we can place it more closely. Many model 20s had 5" barrels.

Did it look like this...
