Well gentlemen I have a real nice blued mod 29 with a target trigger and it's killing me. What I mean is that I need to either get a new smooth trigger for this thing or grind sand and buff what I have. For me it wouldn't be a big job to smooth the trigger but I could also purchase a new unit and install it myself. I don't know if there is any fitting of the new trigger or if it's just a r&r job. You know I am talking about S&W here. Thanks for any light you may be able to shed on the subject. Chief

Those serrations can hurt. I've seen and heard of it being done both ways. If you opt to change the trigger, you'll have to fit it and do a trigger job. Smith will sell you another trigger, but you'll have to tell them what the exact model is. As in 29-3, etc. $42.77.
Removing the rebound slide assembly(part of the trigger job) requires a special tool. It's a rod about 3/16" diameter(I think. Made one long ago but forget the exact diameter. Had to turn it to get the right diameter)with a slot that's bent to get at the pin so you can remove the spring.
I'd guess that about 10 minutes with a rotary tool will sort it out too. You'd likely just need to smooth the edges on the serrations.

Thanks sunray, I kinda thought there would be a little bit of fitting to a new part. S&W sells a trigger and also they sell a trigger assembly for about the same price, what exactly is that? The smithie I talked to didn't know what that was that is why I am asking these question here. I may try the smoothing approach and if that doesn't work well I'll just get another trigger. Anybody else want to add anything I'm listening. Thanks. Chief ;)

Depends on your desire to keep the gun all original (collector) or just have a shooter. On a shooter, I just pull the trigger and grind the serrations off with a combination of accessories on my ...DREMEL!!!! Gasp! Obviously must use caution as the little bugger can get away from you. I finish up with finer and finer grits of sandpaper, then rouge.
For a collector, buy another trigger to fit and keep your original as is.

I can't buy stuff to look at, I am shooting this thing and wants it to work properly. I shot it today with lite loads and it is fine, With my normal loads I'll have to change it. gotta do a trigger job anyroads so any advice on that will be helpful also. By the way it's a very good shooter. I thought it would be too nice to shoot, but I just can't look and not shoot. Chief

Few people know it, but the trigger in K. L and N frame S&W revolvers is the same, but hammers are different. This fact gives you a number of options.

I wouldn't modify the hammer you have, because I think you'd end up with something that still wasn't what you wanted. A new trigger from S&W would likely be MIM (Metal Injected Molded) which are probably O.K., but many people don't like using them in older guns.

A trigger assembly is one that contains the associated internal parts, such as a trigger lever and hand torsion spring, plus the pins that hold them in place. A trigger would be stripped, without the other parts.

You didn't specifiy which dash-number your model 29 might be, but in most cases a S&W part no. 045960000 trigger assy. (smooth face, .312" wide) will work.

You can order one from Numrich Gunparts Corporation (www.e-gunparts.com) under their item no. 309430.

Fitting should not be required, but expect that some might be.

Old Fuff, this is a 29-5, even tho it's not p&r as were the first few 29's I had, I think it's a better quality gun with a poorer fit and finish. Still all in all a beauty. I knew about the triggers selection and even priced 'em' I don't want to alter any sear or other working angles so is why I ask about the fitting of the trigger. I have a 686 with the .312 trigger which I really like but am not sure that when I fill with 2400 the .44 cases I will appreciate the narrowness. By the way, Numrich is out the the trigger assemble. Thanks for the info.
Boxhead, I would like to post a pic of mine but alas, I don't know how. I like the looks of your trigger, did you take the serations down completely? I'm thinking that all I need to do is take 'em down half way and polish. What do you think? I got a blurry pic in...ha ha!
