Well I mentioned to a guy at work that I may be in the market for a 5 shot snub. I told him to keep an eye out he often comes across things. He says you know I may have one. Today he comes in and has a S&W model 38 airweight bodyguard no dash with a gold trigger and hammer. I have no knowledge of the gold accents (not fond of either). I like this and am thinking of making it my always pocket piece. What are your thoughts. He has said to just give him my highest price. It looks to be in great shape with no wear to say.

Well, I never saw a standard model factory stock S&W with a gold plated trigger like a Browning, so it is most likely aftermarket. You have to wonder what else went on in there. Maybe for show, maybe somebody read the old article about gold plating to smooth the working surfaces. If it shoots, great, but I would not buy it without a thorough testfire.

If its in really good shape except for the mods what would a revolver like this worth. Im sure the being altered should save me a few bucks. It also comes with story. The original owner died in a "boating accident" and this guy is the second owner. He said he wasnt charging for the story juts the gun.

Jim Watson is right about gold plating being used in an attempt to smooth up the action.

I won't go into why plating doesn't really help here but I will suggest that you have a competent 'smith open 'er up and make sure nothing was done to it that shouldn't have been.

The plating tells you someone has been inside it so you may as well have it checked out.
