Curious if anyone else has experienced this. I have a s&w mod 57 with a screw hole that is stripped. Can a gun smith do this, or is this for the factory?

No, I have never seen one stripped. Screws yes, holes no.

If there is any thread catching at all?
I would degrease the hole & screw and put it back in with Blue Lock-Tight.

Fixing it would require drilling it out & retapping it for a larger screw.
Then that screw would have to be hand made.

A good gunsmith could do it.

I don't know what S&W would do, but I doubt they would make you a custom handmade screw.
Course, it could be they already have a parts drawer full of over-size screws already too.

You might call thier customer service number and see what they say.

Probably right. I think the S&W is 5-44, though they may have changed that on the newer guns.

I did a search on Heli-Coil. Small sizes available are: 1-8, 1-12, 1-14, 1-64, 2-8, 2-56, 2-64, 3-48, 3-56, 4-40, 4-48, 5-40, 6-32, 6-40, 8-32, 8-36............... Much smaller sizes than I would have ever thought they would make.

I called s&w, they said send it in and they will take a look at it and send a cost estimate to me. I was hoping for helicoil. If my eyes are right, it looks like a #8 48tpi. I can get #8 46 at Brownells but not 48tpi. Thanks for every ones help.
