I am looking for a bobbed hammer to replace the stock on my m58 41 magnum, any info on if this would be a simple swap of hammers? Right now my biggest problem is finding a bobbed hammer for one. Anybody have any advice on where I can find one? Thanks

Older S&W hammers were not drop-in parts.
Unless you know what you are doing, give the S&W custom shop a call and see if they can fit a bobbed replacement hammer to your gun and return the old hammer unmolested.
Cutting the stock hammer would devalue any collector value the Model 58 has attained over the years considerably.

I somehow have a hard time getting my head around taking a perfecly good S&W Magnum N-Frame, square butt,
41 oz revolver and making it a DAO hide-out gun?
Seems like a waste of one of the best SA triggers ever made.
The .41 Mag is just made for accurate long range shooting in SA mode!
It won't be much of a hoot to shoot in DA all the time I betcha!
If it needs anything to personalize it, it probably needs some custom wood grips that fill and fit the hand.
Those Magna grips just don't do the job with Magnum loads.

Does it have the wide target trigger? That's something they could fix/change while they've got it. Not terribly comfortable or helpful for much DA shooting, which is what about 97% of my revolver shooting tends to be.

I do see your point rcmodel, but I want this for an all the time carry gun, and I plan on doing as much carry with it as I can to include concealed and I feel the bobbed hammer will make it more comfortable never having the oppertunity to jab me in the side at unexpected times.
Even though I have seen some custom gunsmith work where they don't completely bob the hammer but leave enough textured to get purchase for single action I am also looking into that (any suggestions on gunsmith's who do this work will be appreciated). I'm in the leave the hammer alone camp, but it's your gun, you paid the money I didn't. If it pleases you it's your gun.
As for ammo that would be pleasant to shoot, try WW 175gr Silvertip. I once had a 3" 657 (foolishly traded) & that load chronographed just over 1100fps & was pleasant to shoot. It'd make a great defense load.

If you want to make it "your own", do so. I carry a 4" N frame daily and have not touched the hammer. The hammer spur makes it easier to get a secure holster but there are styles available for the hammerless types. All my shooting is double action from close in to far away. Practice is the key to accuracy and the double action on a well fitted S&W is the best. Enjoy your 58!
14 or so years ago I had C&S customize one of my mdl 58s for carry. Instal mdl.57 barrel shorten to 31/2,full action job da only matte hard chrome,Mcgivern front sight,beautiful stag grips. It has been one of my best carry guns in a threepersons holster. Yes it is a collectors gun but No one made what I wanted. I just added to the value of the other ones out there. Next I would like to just change the barrel on one to a tapered mountian gun barrel with Mcgivern front sight.

Not questioning your shooting ablilities, just making a point that a full house .41 is at the upper limits of MY ability, shooting double action "rapidly and accurately".
Love the 58; carry one at the ranch a lot ("open", not concealed).

Bobbing the spur does not make it DAO. If this is a self-defense modification, you might want to consider actually making it DAO. Would be involved: put in a new sear (to preserve the old one), fit it, remove the cocking notch.
Well, I guess I've been pretty free about spending your money, haven't I?
Also the best SD factory ammo available, IMHO. I wish someone offered a better SD load: lighter bullet, big HP cavity, velocity about 1000 fps--but absent anything like that, Silvertips are it.

I'll second the "Jordan Trooper" stocks they are great for fast DA shooting. They might not suit you though unless your hands are a bit large. Bill Jordan had huge hands. I like mine!

i say bob it or put a replacement bobbed hammer on it if thats what you want. its your gun and you are the one using it. make it work for you. personally, i think a bobbed hammer fixed sight N-Frame looks like it means serious buisness.
