I have both N and L frames in .357 magnum. I prefer the N frames myself. They carry just fine. A Model 27 4” was my first LE revolver. You can’t go wrong with either. The main thing here as that you aren’t looking at a Ruger
I've got a blackhawk in the safe and a sp101on order at my lgs.

SA Rugers are great. I never liked their DA offerings much.
I never really have been either. Honestly. I had a security six for a while because it had been shot a lot and was "shot in". It had a sweet Da pull and the Sa pull was like glass at 3.5 lbs. The Gp100 leaves room for improvement to me. A few years ago my best friend's uncle bought a 4.2" SP101 and invited my friend an I to come and help him "shoot it in" over the weekend. We put 2500 rounds of all different sorts, mostly handloads and a variety of different 38 &357 defensive and hunting ammo. By Sunday afternoon she was running like a champ and shooting nice groups at 35yds. The trigger pulls in DA & SA were the best i've felt/shot.
I've got one of those sp's on order, but it'll be a bit before it gets in because of corona.

Ruger DA/SA revolvers look frumpy to me but they do have a good reputation for reliability. I have a 45 Colt Redhawk and a 44 Special GP100. Both shoot well but I prefer the looks of an S&W revolvers.

Looks is a personal thing but you can't go wrong with either brand of revolver.

I'd take the 586. I think the L frame is perfectly suited to 357mag. In my opinion, the N frame is best in calibers that start with "4".

My 4" 686-0 is probably my all time favorite handgun, despite me not having much love for the 357mag cartridge.

I thought of something else for you to think about. In your previous thread, you were debating between the 4" and 6.5" Model 27's. If you consider the 586, you'll have a similar choice of 4" or 6" and the 6" barrel has a full underlug. I already mentioned the different grips on the 27's, but the other thing that occurred to me is that the 6.5 and 6" guns are really best suited to shooting with two hands. They can be one-handed, but they're a lot of gun. Personally, I still prefer the longer, heavier barrels, but if I were to shoot primarily one-handed, I would prefer the 4" barrel.

I have a model 27-2 with a 6” barrel and it is a great old gun. Very accurate and the weight does a great job of absorbing the recoil. Fairly heavy but a great gun for the range. I have shot a 586 and really like the feel of the L frame vs the K frame. Would like to find a nice 586 with a 4” barrel for woods carry.

Between the 586 & 27. I would go with the 586. My favorite revolver is my 686 + 3"

N frame target gun with a 8 shot cylinder would be great! Something to carry the L frame is better!!
