Model 59 S&W

Several years ago I purchased a used Model 59. The barrel had been replaced and it looked like a gunsmith had gone over the gun completely.

I was going to replace the grips and found the following etched inside LVMPD. It probably means Las Vegas Metro PD but I could be wrong about that. Also I am curious as to when this gun was manufactured. The Serial # is A174972 and is located just above where model 59 is stamped.

I don't have access to any S&W serial number listings, but while I was looking for another article in my collection of old Guns&Ammo magazines, I came across their April '73 issue. Right on the cover is the new S&W Model 59, serial number A170525. Since this was probably written some 2 to 3 months prior to the gun's release, I would think that your gun could possibly be the same year, or just a little after that.
