I just bought a S&W model 5904 and I'm not having any problems breaking it down ... I just cant figure how to get the grips or grip off ...and does anyone know if the grips you find on ebay that fit 1911 will they fit the 5904?

Just did this yesterday. (make sure the pistol is empty...etc) There is a pin at the bottom at the rear of grip. Use a punch and drive it out. I did it by placing the gun on top of a hard foam surface (from packing materials) and drove the pin out. The pin can be driven out from either directions. Once the pin is out, slide the grip down until it catches. At this point gently pry open the grip panels so that the tabs can slide over the frame. The mainspring rests on the bottom of the grip. 1911 grips will not work. Use the straight OEM grips if you want thinner grips.

The straight OEM grips are less thick than the curved ones. I'd measured it with calipers. Hogue rubber grips and aftermarket wood grips make the grips really thick and unmanageable for those with smaller hands.
