Well I don't know much about this gun other than I picked it up at a gun show several years ago for $500. The serial number (G1223xxx) appears to date it to 1976 however this is if it is entered with only the numbers and no letter. I'm hoping you all can tell me a little about it and what it may or may not be worth. It does not have a floor plate, it is a blind feed with solid wood under the magazine. It is a Model 70 30-06. Thanks for the help everyone.

pull the bolt and take a picture of the bolt face. what scope is on there? what is stamped on the barrel?

I don't know about the rifle's value, but from the pictures it sure looks nice. how does it shoot?

Pentax Gameseeker 3-9X40 scope (I put on) Kwiksite rings that are open to use the irons. I've never fired it and can't tell if it ever has been fired. Looks like brand new. It's getting the cleaning of it's life this weekend.

Barrel says Winchester Model 70 30-06 Winchester proof

Here is the bolt face and a shot of the barrel stamp

Are you sure it is not a Winchester 670? They have a blind magazine and are push feed. They are basically a Model 70 on a cheaper stock and blind magazine. All Model 70's, if I am not mistaken, have a floorplate.

This is not necessarily a bad thing. I have a 670 and it is extremely accurate, but it is not valued as much as a model 70.

It says Model 70 on the barrel, not Model 670. As far as a cheaper stock, I haven't seen many nicer than the stock that is on it. I'm sure I'll find out more today during it's cleaning and disassembly.

I would think any Model 70 is worth what you paid. Off topic i grew up in Eakly, you guys used to put on a great High School baseball tournament in the spring, this was the early 70's, my mom still lives there.

It is just a budget version of a model 70. It would be hard to get more than around $250 for that version around here. It appears that someone put a model 70 into a 670 stock for whatever reason. Hard to say for sure from the pictures, but it appears to be a birch stock like used on the 670 with a dark stain. If it is walnut, it isn't a very good example.

The 1960's and 1970's were not good years for Winchester products quality wise. If it shoots good I'd consider it a good knock around rifle.

The Firing Line forum helped identify it. It is a Model 70A also referred to as the Ranger. $250? Haven't seen any Model 70 go for that, even if its been beat. Thanks for the info though. I disassembled and cleaned it today and I'm not seeing any wear marks which leads me to believe it probably has a low round count and was very well maintained.

I will make the offer to anyone with a Model 70A in this condition I will give you $250 for any and all of them.

Jeff

It's a push feed made from the early 70's to mid 70's. I bought one in college in 1971. The only thing it has in common with a pre 64 Model 70 is the model number. The original Model 70 became too costly to manufacture and this became Winchester's answer for the mass market. Unfortunately it flopped and contributed to Winchester's demise. They shoot OK but are basically a utility gun.
