Model 70 factory trigger on a 4 year old Coyote. I have fiddled with it to where I can't get it better. Tiniest bit of creep. Zero overtravel. The return spring has just enough tension to reset the trigger on the sear. Yet it is heavier than I would like. Pull weight, it seems to me, now comes 98% from the sear spring.

Looking at after market triggers, none of them replace the sear spring.

Can I safely replace that spring with a weaker one, or cut a bit off the factory spring?

You can take too much off of a sear spring..

I'm not expert... Been there, done that though. My advice: Get a replacement spring set, either factory or from "Trapper". If you get the factory spring, then trim on the new one. A little at a time. Half coil at a time. Unfortunately, it's length is important. (at least you know exactly where you're starting from with the one you've got -no harm done).

If you get the set from Trapper, then I doubt you'll want to trim anything. (Less than $15.00). http://www.apwcogan.com/trapper_spring_kits.htm
If this doesn't get you what you want, http://www.timneytriggers.com/timneytriggers.php?page=home
and email them for seconds, or blemished units. DO NOT buy the target match grade trigger for a hunting rifle. -'Ma God Those Should Be Illegal!'

M70 trigger

The old standard way to adjust a M70 trigger was to cut sear engagement in half by stoning the trigger and by cutting the spring 2 coils

How light DO you want it?

My M70 adjusted down to about 2 3/4 lbs, though there's just a hint of creep. At that weight, it's safe and reliable* under all conditions I've encountered from Minnesota winters to Texas summers, as well as three African safaris.

* - by this I mean that I can't make the rifle go off by jarring it, fiddling with the safety, working the bolt smartly, or by anything except deliberately pulling the trigger.

I agree with Jackofalltrades...,
Trapper makes springs that work very well and I doubt you will be disappointed in them. I have also cut the factory spring back a coil at a time and the trigger pull was still not what I wanted. Replacing with a Trapper spring made the difference.

Hank B, I want it really light. My Model 70 is a prairie dog special, now wearing a #8 SS Shilen chambered in 204 Ruger. Weighs close to 15 pounds. I think the pull is about 3 pounds. As good as I can get it, but not nearly as light as I've got a 700 Rem trigger adjusted on another 204.

I'll get Trapper's spring kit. Thanks for your help guys.

I have a model 70 that I used to use in High Power rfile matches. I used the stock trigger at a very crsip 2 lbs as they say, like breaking glass.. spent some time stoning the trigger hook and the mating sear. Made a lot of difference. I have another M70 with a Jewell trigger on it. I'm a bit disppointed in it's lack of crispness.

Your Jewell isn't crisp? My three are absolutely phenomenal. Sub 18 ounces and no creep at all.

Just take the sear adjustment down. If it becomes unstable during safety check, you can take a bit of wet/dry paper and take a couple thousandths off the cocking lug on the bolt to make things right.
