I've read a bunch of threads on here that recommend using model acrylic paint to paint the front sight on a gun.

I purchased some testors acrylic paint to do the front sight on my security six, but I want to make sure I can get it off before I put it on. The package says "paint is permanent when dry."

How do you remove model acrylic paint from a front sight? The gun is blued, so I want to make sure I don't damage the bluing. Also, the front sight is serrated so I can't chip it off very easily.

About any solvent will soften the paint with soaking. Time is your friend. Not much sticks to bare steel, it will soften and can be rubbed off.

If you have a female around then borrow her fingernail polish remover. The main active ingredient is acetone.

There are some NON-acetone fingernail polish

removers but they might work also. Just an addition to the posting one or two above this one.

ACETONE

I keep a quart can of Acetone, it has many many uses. When my wife runs out of fingernail polish remover she borrows my acetone. She says it does a better job. I keep it hidden;)

Not to thread drift, but "sight black" works better on your front sight if that's what you want to do. It comes in little spray cans. I prefer my orange ramp front sight though.

Non-chlorinated brake cleaner (I use Prestone) + cleaning brush + about 1 minute.

I've done it several times.
Best

Hoppe's and a little rubbing will take it right off, as will Gun Scrubber. I've painted whole guns with Testor's and later removed it completely. Took a little work, but it all came off, with no damage. A little on the sight wont be any problem.

If your worried about it coming off while cleaning, a couple of coats of their clear, flat lacquer will help slow the solvents down, but it too will come off eventually.

Just scrape it off with your thumbnail. Worked for me. That stuff is made to stick to plastic, not metal.

I paint my sights with model car paint also. When I want to remove it, I use brake clean & a toothpick. It comes off easily & dosent harm the factory white dots.

mine usually wears off before i want it to. like ryanm said above, you should be able to scape it off with a fingernail (unless your sights are plastic.
