i'm sorry if this has been asked before. i didn't find it in a quick search. which rifle has less felt recoil? i just got my c&r and am looking at getting one of them. i do alot of shooting with my nephews and i now they will want to try it out.

A 91/30 is much more pleasant to shoot, but there is something fun about the muzzle blast of an M44.

M44 will thump you worse than a 91/30 for sure. Get one of those slip-on recoil pads. They help a lot.

If you don't mind spending more money for a more accurate and slightly heavier gun that'll thump your shoulder a little bit less, get a Finnish M39. More accurate, better trigger, much better barrel, better stock, better sights, about 3x more $$ than a run of the mill 91/30 but well worth it.

Recoil is managable with either. The 91/30s longer barrel will have lower pressurized gases upon bullet release. Either one will be easy to shoot. Realize that accuracy is a shot in the dark. That is, you are gambling on how well it will shoot. Take a look at the bayonet where its fixed to the side of the barrel. When the bayonet is fully extented it should extend past a little bump on where it pivots just as its in position. This is often know as a "protective ear". Russia put these on in 1946 so if your reciever isn't stamped that will let you know the date and often times the condition as Russia was scrambling for arms in the early part of WWII so quality control wasn't as good.

the m44 is about the same weight as the 91/30. but has a much shorter barrel. and a LOUD boom. the boom can be intimidating to new shooters or those not used to full power rifle rounds. it probibly adds to the PERCIEVED recoil in a sense perception type of thing. but both rifles exert about the same rearward force.

I believe, at least from my limited expierence, that it is more the sound of the rifle upon discharging that causes someone to flinch than that of the actual recoil. Unless the rifle is of a very large caliber, and usually then it has a muzzle brake anyway.

91/30 has less

lucky you... some of us applied in early june and still are wating

I have both a M44 and a 91/30. My son shoots the M44 and I like the 91/30 best.
I like to shoot it 200 yards with the original iron sights so the longer barrel helps with accuracy.

The m44s don't recoil that much harder than the 91/30, but the M38s sure do. I prefer the 91/30s by a huge margin- even if I found a M44 that shoots as good as some of my 91/30s, the 91/30s balance a whole lot better.

I can shoot my 91/30 comfortably without a slip on recoil pad but not the M44 or M38. I fitted a muzzle break to the M44 to reduce the recoil and muzzle climb and it works great!
