Went down to the local DNR rifle range. There's no official range officers there full time, so usually one of the shooters will do it. Today I was acting as a range officer since I was the first one there. For the first hour everything was running smoothly, shooting for about 15-20 minutes with a 5 minute break between stings.

We went range hot at 10:02 and I was planning to call a cease fire at 10:20, but as I finished a clip* around 10:15 I saw movement out of the corner of my eye. A guy at the other end of the range was walking down range with no call for Cease fire or Range Cold!

I put my rifle down and looked around to see if anyone else was shooting, no one was so I asked if I had missed a call for 'cease fire'. No one else at my end had heard anything either.

Turns out the dude checked with a few people around him, but didn't clear the entire range before going down range.

*Yes, a clip, I was shooting an M1 at that time.

Had that happen every now and then. Some people just don't understand that yes, there are people on the firing line other than their immediate left and right....

I've seen it happen on the range i frequent too. I was just finishing up firing 15 or so 9mm down range when i caught movement out of the corner of my eye. It was some idiot walking BACK from going to replace his targets... on a hot range.

At my club, no one is that stupid. However, there are plenty of people who will call a cease fire to change targets without making sure everyone is aware it is coming. Several times I only found out when the buzzer went off.

I have had the opposite happen. Someone else open up when everyone else was down range. Normally you don't see too many Darwin Award winners willing to walk down a live fire range in progress.
